The Road to Cardiff - Ding Donged

For 50 minutes little Yeading held out against the famous black & white stripes but eventually two 2nd half goals saw Newcastle United win through against their amateur opposition and Heppers not to mention the other Northern monkeys that I know, Stimpson & Peart let out a huge sigh of relief.

Despite a difference of 123 league places and six divisions, Yeading showed scant respect for their Premiership opponents and in the opening exchanges were determined to test out Newcastle's new £8m signing Jean-Alain Boumsoung. The Frenchman twice conceded free-kicks in dangerous positions and from the second for a foul on Errol Telemaque, Newcastle's defence was flat-footed as Emond Protain rose highest to head over.

As expected the Geordies tried to wear out The Ding with some fast and neat passing letting the plasterers and painters do all the running around but it was Ding who had one of the best chances before the break when David Clarke curled a free-kick around the wall and it needed a full-length save from Harper to keep it out.

Mind you, before that Bellamy had rattled the crossbar and Delroy Preddie produced a brilliant fingertip save from Jermain Jenas' piledriver.

After the break Clarke curled another free kick wide from 22 yards but five minutes into the second half, the sighs of relief were audible from the travelling Magpies - who probably made up half of the attendance - as Newcastle took the lead.

Ameobi's pass found Bellamy scuttling into the inside-right channel and he placed the ball across goal to provide BOWYER with the simplest of tap-ins.

AMOEBI gave Newcastle some breathing space just after the hour when he got ahead of his marker to plant a firm header past Preddie to make it 2-0.

After that Newcastle attacked in waves as the part-timers tired, but they refused to fold and showed determination and spirit to deny Newcastle.

Yeading were denied a deserved consolation when Harper went full-length to palm away Darti Brown's fierce shot.

Newcastle boss Souness said afterwards "Until we scored the second goal we were always holding our breath. As long as it was 1-0 they were in the game, and we must have missed half a dozen gilt-edged chances."

Yeading manager 'Drax' Hippolyte said: "After my kids being born this was the second proudest day of my life."

So, The Geordies take over the mantle as N&R's team on The Road to Cardiff and they will play managerless Coventry in the next round.

Yeading team: Preddie, Nevin Saroya, Marc Leach, Stanley,Barima (Behzadi 74), Haule, Darti Brown, Clarke,Protain (Woodruffe 78), Telemaque (Quamina 84), DJ Campbell.

Yeading FC - who are ya?

It is no surprise to find out that Yeading's team consists of the preverbial painter, decorator and delivery driver. However for this week they are all superstars with television camera's appearing at their training ground and BBC cameras will show their match against Newcastle United live on Sunday. Kick off is 1.45pm.

The likeable manager Johnson "Drax" Hippolyte whose full-time job involves making marble kitchen worktops, has become a bit of a star but since he took over at The Warren in 2001 he has had quite a lot of success. After saving them from relegation in 2001, Yeading beat Canvey Island to win the Bryco Cup in 2003 and last year Johnson's side won the Ryman League Division One North.

This season they are pissing the Ryman Premier League and have only lost twice in 19 games. Money from the game at Loftus Road will enable Yeading to improve their stadium at The Warren and allow them to step up to the Nationwide Conference South next season.

Here is a look at some of their best players:

Dudley 'DJ' Campbell - started out as a pro at Aston Villa, then QPR but has slowly made his way down the football ladder however the striker has really caught the eye during their Cup run. Last season he won the Isthmian First Division Golden Boot after scoring 36 goals and is already close to the 30-goal mark for this season.

Marc Leach - Impressive defender who played many league games for Wycombe Wanderers.

Emond Protain - First name on the teamsheet. Came to the Ding via Harrow Borough and Wembley (presumably by bus!)

David Clarke - Club captain. Started his career with Notts County, current player of the year.

The chances of The Ding winning are slim if not anorexic but Magpies manager Graeme Souness has already stated that he is worried and it looks like Shearer, Bellamy and Kluivert will all be missing. Come on, it's got to be worth a fiver at 28/1 hasn't it?

Former Spurs hero Steve Perryman is vice-president of Yeading (great article). His brother Bill is their commercial manager. It's a big weekend for Steve as he is also Exeter's (unpaid) Director of Football

There are no excuses, get you arses in front of the box on Sunday and cheer The Ding to victory. I plan too.

Yid, doh, doh, doh!

Courtesy of Rob Beere who has contacts at the FA:

An FA spokesman after the game absolved the linesman of any responsibility for the apparently mistaken decision not to award a goal to Spurs after a shot from the halfway line crossed the goal line by at least a metre.

"The shot came in from an unusual distance and as such caught the linesman out of position forcing him to race back towards the goal as the play developed", explained the spokesman, "As he ran, the United scarf he was wearing under his shirt came loose and fluttered up into
his face obscuring his view and preventing him from making the call. It was just one of those things."

In response to further questions from the Press the spokesman explained "If they don't already have a United tattoo most officials on game day try to wear a scarf or a replica shirt under their regulation kit to show their support for the worlds greatest club. The linesman in this
case had chosen to wear a United scarf, a common choice that is in keeping with FA guidelines."

"The root cause of the problem lies not with the linesman but with the players and management of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club who broke one the most important unwritten rules of the English FA: They placed a shot on target at Old Trafford. Martin Jol is new to this country and perhaps he s not yet familiar with some of our finer traditions. Fortunately if he doesn't yet understand that for the greater good of the game visiting teams, by tradition, are not expected to try to score at Old Trafford then our officials are in a position to help Mr Jol make that cultural adjustment."

Chuckling to himself the FA spokesman added "The goal had to be disallowed to avoid us descending down a slippery slope that would be bad for the national game. It's a fine line the officials have to walk. If they award a goal this week, next week someone might expect a penalty or ask that Van Nistleroy be booked for diving. Can you imagine? That would just never do. No no no. Shocking, just the thought of it."

Letters page

I get a lot of emails from managers - which is nice. No bastard ever uses the comments section on the web page which is what is supposed to happen but ho hum.

Here are a couple received today:

Simon,
Happy New Year and Merry Christmas.
After a complete hammering in the press it is time for further changes to Defoe's Golden XI. It is unfortunate that Defoe's Golden XI hasn't experienced a turnaround in fortunes similar to that of my beloved Tottenham Hotspur. Although with the transfer window now open it gives me a chance to hack out the injury prone old duffers and replace them with an equally poor bunch of losers in a desperate effort to reach my target of one above the re-election zone, which would be quite an accomplishment without any Gooners.

Mark Dewberry.

Mark - did you read at the weekend about Jermain Defoe dumping his agents SFX? Yes, he wants more money and a "bigger team". He has been at Tottenham (finished eight places below Charlton) for a year after dumping West Ham for a "bigger team", five years after he dumped Charlton for a "bigger team" (West Ham, relegated 2003). Judas-ism is alive and well in the Jewish stronghold of North London I see? Nobs

Dear Nobster
Young, not anymore 28 this year.... shocking!! Oh yeah I'm still pushing me chest out..... cheeky!!!
Soozie Syrett

Right lads, get around to Apex Re and give me a status report. Nobs

Ready's Benfleet Bet reminder

Roll up, roll up. Less than one week to go to enter Ready's Benfleet Bet. If you haven't got your FA Cup 3rd Round Predictions to me yet, please get your finger out.

Please email your entry by no later than 6pm BST (12noon CST) on January 7th 2005. I will send the entry form out again on email shortly. You can also fax me entries to 001 312 381 6878.

Good luck. Any problems, call me on 001 312 381 4382.

Fantasy League entry payment details

I know quite a few of you have asked about bank details to pay in your outstanding entry money and to be honest I have been meaning to do this for ages but haven't got round to it.

There will be 2 ways to pay me. One is to give either a cheque made out to me or the cash to Lee Baughan and secondly it is by popping into a Woolwich branch with 25 nicker giving them these details:

Bank - Woolwich
Account No. - 34342738
Sort Code - 10 80 12
Reference - L965427555Z
Name of Account - Simon Newport (Fantasy)

Many thanks. I will repeat this in an email to my list of debtors. I would appreciate payment as quick as possible as a lot is outstanding.

No Sweat

Breaking News 8888 Week 20 scores 8888 Breaking News
Lee Baughan's Rose was ruined by a ladyboy claimed the week 20 MoW award of 5 quid after ramming in a top weekly score of 64 points - by far and away his season's best score. The Sweatster moved upto a nose bleed inducing 11th place in process.

Blessed are the Cheesemakers are in 24th after hitting 62 points the same as Lord Harris who left the AIG with a bang (actually a bit of a knee trembler - I trust Catherine and Karen have their alibi's ready?) . Roffey's rejects climb away from danger to 35th.

Ping Pong are yo-yo'ing up and down the table. This week it was upward as Suzie stuck her chest out (....hold that thought) and whacked in 60 points to move back into the prize spots. Let's all the beat the Gooners are on a role. 56 points for Mark who is now in a season high of 5th.

Moulster's Molesters deserve a mention as Shaun scored 53 points and rose 4 places and 2Infinity & beyond continued their steady improvement notching 47.

Good scores also for Tom Finney's splash (46), Glasgow kiss (45) and Jonny on my shoulder (51).

The weeks poorest score's were from Beer Monster's who collapsed 7 places to 21st after scoring 19 and Happy Hammers who hit a point less.

Ginger back in 2nd

Breaking News 8888 Week 20 scores 8888 Breaking News
A 60 point gain brought Pete Doyle's Ginger (not so) Athletic back into 2nd place above West Ham 4 West Germany 2 in week 20. Ben didn't have a bad week mind, he still scored 49.

Wenners Wannabe's struggled through last week and scored 39, so are now only leading by a 5 point margin. 7 points seperate the top 3, then there is a 50 point gap to 4th, Back Home.

But then only 14 points seperate 4th and 10th - oh, its very exciting isn't it? I said, isn't it?

Lets all beat the Gooners rise to 5th, Tatters top tips fell 2 places to 6th, whilst Ping Pong Yo-Yo are in 7th alongside Keep the faith. Lamb to the slaughter and Jonny on my shoulder swap places in the top 10.

Finally a mention of Luadjemba. The only manager to have been in the top 10 all season finds himself in 12th at the turn of the year after a very disappointing, although by no means crap weekly score of 37.

Defoe's golden shower

Breaking News 8888 Week 20 scores 8888 Breaking News
As Judas Defoe prepares himself for a transfer window move, his lover Mark Dewberry sank further into the re-election mire after Week 20. Defoe's golden XI were a shower (geddit?) last week scoring a miserly 28 points in what was a very high scoring 7 days.

Mark slips to 44th, overtaken by Woody's Warriors who scored 32. Out of the bottom 6 go Californication after a stirring 44 points and in come Happy Hammers.

Three managers all rather ominously fell places towards the drop zone. Can I get a waistcoat, who had previously been on good form scored 23 and slipped 5 places. Herecomethewildebeests mustered only 22 and are now in 40th, (and by the way Tone, Ready is catching you up in the looks stakes. I would get back on the sunbed if I were you?) a place ahead of Goonersmoan who looking reet re-election fodder if you ask me.

Team Challenge - XLRe hot on heels of Marsh

In the turn of the year Team Challenge Trophy table, Marsh are still out in front with an impressive average score of 690 but closing them down are the boys from XLRe. Fortunately not hampered by Barrett's uselessness (he is joint manager with RSA's Alex Baxter) they moved up the table 5 places.

Talking of RSA due to their recent transfer deadline signings of Greg Harris from AIG and Lee Day from Allianz the boys from Leadenhall Street have joined the fold. In fact AIG were probably glad to get rid of the posh bloke for FL reason's only you understand as he was their worst performer.

AIG stay 5th behind Aon's Fac team and their London Casualty team who both dropped a place. RSA join the table in 6th.

At the bottom the rest of you lot are still being held up by the mighty Aon Chicago outfit of me, Tim and Brian.

A full table will be sent out with the Week 20 scores.

Sunday, January 02, 2005

Just a thought....

Some New Year's announcements:

Lee Day starts work at RSA in the next couple of days after his departure from Allianz and enforced gardening leave, which included a long weekend here in Chicago learning from Gumbsy how to hold girls hands. Good luck Lee.

His old oppo Greg Harris also joins RSA from AIG, so instead of being made to drink Stella by Cryer, he will now be made to drink Stella by Lee Day and Gary Long. At least young Gregory will eat though, probably about four chickens a day! Good luck Greg.

There is no truth in the rumour however that Danny Rose has started writing a Thai Brothel scheme in Lloyds even though he did extensively survey each and every location in Koh Samui recently.

Happy New Year

Nobby & Ready would like to wish all of our friends in the N&R FL a Happy and prosperous New Year. I will raise a glass to you here in Chicago at midnight (6am London time) and Keith will do the same although this year he is a bit closer to the Meridien Line.

All the best to you and yours.

Love Nobby & Ready.

ps. If you're staying in tonight or you are reading this on Tuesday and are bored, you might enjoy this.

Footballers donate to disaster fund

I can't stop watching CNN's coverage of the tsunami, it's like a drug. My eyes just wide open at the images before me, my head empty. Last night I was out for dinner with some friends and one of the girls raised her glass to remember the dead and missing but it's not enough is it?

Helplessness is what I feel, although the following wise words from New York Addick have made me see things clearer "whilst it puts our passion for football in its proper perspective, it also illustrates the shortness of life and the importance of celebrating its wonder since it can be wiped out so tragically. If something as ultimately as pointless as football can help us do so, we shouldn't feel guilty about it."

It is heartwarming to see that Charlton have doubled the £50,000 donation pledged by Premiership clubs. "I think a lot of people feel helpless, but by contributing to the disaster relief fund everyone can play their part in saving further lives and helping the region to recover. That's certainly what we feel at Charlton, and that is what has prompted the further donation by the directors, players and staff." said Matt Holland today.

Players at Man U, Man City, Everton and even Dwight Yorke have also further contributed.

Sportsmen and women in the world of tennis and cricket have also been contributing. Swedish tennis player Jonas Bjorkman, along with his doubles partner Mahesh Bhupathi are donating their earnings from next week's Indian Open. Sweden, whose people are great travellers and can be found all over the Far East have lost as many as 1,000 nationals in the disaster.

Ready's Benfleet Bet

It's that time of year again when the mighty (Rochdale) play the underdogs (Charlton) in the world's best cup competition. For our American viewers, it is only known as the worlds best competition but the winners do not actually become the world champions as that would be silly and require every football team in the world to take part and not just those from England!

As you are well aware we started the Road to Cardiff back in August with Odd Down FC and 8 rounds later we're still supporting a non-league team in the form of Yeading - more on their Cup tie with Newcastle nearer to the big day.

So, those old hands - and we have a number of previous winners amongst us - know that Ready sets the rules, it is free to enter but the competition is only open to N&R FL manager's. The prize fund is £25 (about $4m by the current exchange rate).

All you have to do is email your entry by no later than 6pm BST (12noon CST) on January 7th 2005. The entry forms will be emailed to you shortly. You can also fax me entries to 001 312 381 6878.

The rules will be included within the entry form but I will repeat them again here. Remember Ready's decision is final.

Scoring Points
1 point home win
2 points away win
3 points draw
3 points correct score
1 additional point per goal in a game where the score has been correctly predicted and there are 5 goals or more during the game.

The rules
No more than 11 draws allowed
No more than 6 identical scores, i.e. 2-1, 1-1 etc. Please note that 1-2 counts as a different score to 2-1
10 points deducted for each breach of rule.

May the best man or woman win. Any problems call me on 001 312 381 4382.

Shock, horror! Ready names his team

After 19 week's Ready has finally blessed us with a team name. And after all this what wonderfully cryptic and humourous title has he bestowed on the league? Hannoi Utd. Erm, yep, apparently it's an anagram of something or other. Maybe young girl suck my dick? nah, too many g's.

Pre-Christmas shake up

Breaking News 8888 Week 19 scores 8888 Breaking News
There was a real shake up in the league table following week 19's results. Ginger (not so) Athletic slipped to 3rd, overtaken by West Ham 4 West Germany 2. Wenners Wannabes increased their lead to a massive 17 points. Tatters top tips and Back home both gained ground on the leaders with Luadjemba slipping to 7th.

The week's biggest story involved Keep the faith and Jonny on my shoulder who both hit the top 10, Rob for the first time this season after scoring 59 points. Ping Pong Yo-Yo, Sweaty did shag ladyboys, You got more toes and Beer Monsters all fell back after recent impressive performances.

The week's best score came from Filthy Love who smacked 61 points and clambered 9 places to 17th a place behind Rose was ruined by a ladyboy who hit 60. Someone other than Arse of Man U and 2Infinity & Beyond are close on their heels. Barry having another fine week scoring 58.

The biggest faller was Galacticos FC who slumped to their lowest position of the season, 20th. Robbos on top and Dale Allstars didn't do too much better dropping 7 to 22nd and 23rd respectively.

The bottom half of the table saw Ready's TBA for the first time this season after he managed his worst score so far on his homecoming (14) but we saw further climbs from both Can I get a waistcoat and the Elephant man(ager) who goes into the Christmas games above their old rivals Better than 2nd.

In the re-election battle Happy Hammers leave the drop zone, replaced by Californication. Defoe's golden XI got their best score (41) in 14 weeks to jump 2 places whilst Only one 'f' in Forest crashed to 3rd from bottom above the two Yankies, Cheeky Americans and Idiots guide to soccer.

All this and the Christmas and New Year games to come which normally produce big scores and some even bigger stories.

My kinda town

It was great to see so many of you in the Jumbo last Monday. Ready was looking swell (or less swell) and I am sure you will join me in hoping that all of his pals out in Thailand are fine following yesterday's awful news.

I had a fun packed week at home and it was nice to have an extended stay to see as many people as possible. Christmas was quiet with my Mum, Dad and brother and it was a right pain in the arse having to drive back to Heathrow Boxing Day lunchtime whilst my brother was sitting in front of the Eastenders Omnibus drinking beer and eating cheese snips!

Boxing Day is another tradition that the Yanks have no concept of, they just get the one day of work which is Christmas Day (so the Friday this year) and are back at work today (Monday). Bag of shite really but a chance to get some crap sorted out, drink more beer and maybe get time to place my end of year renewal!

Hope you British boys and girls had wonderful Christmas' and Brian & Tim, when we going for a beer?

Who, which, why? - Brian Dougal

Brian Dougal is next up in the hot seat. Now, 44 of you don't know Brian and I have to tell you he ain't a bad bloke really, he's a streaky piece of piss but as Lee Day will contest to, an alright geezer. Trouble is if you read his Who, which, why? you would have thought he is a right sap, so therefore I have added some comments to translate what he is trying to say in an unfunny completely American way.

Amongst other poop he talks about the virtues of being in Gary Glitter's gang, his love of Page 3 and gives us a lesson in spelling.

The full entry will be sent via email. For those of you who have yet to send me your questionnaire please consider avoiding the pub one lunchtime and email them to me. Thank you.

Top Mark

Breaking News 8888 Week 18 scores 8888 Breaking News
Mark Wenman, who has not had the best of Christmas', will be cheered by the fact that in week 18 he reached the summit of the N&R FL after taking advantage of a shaky week from Ginger (not so) Athletic. Wenners Wannabe's scored 28 points, 5 more than Doyley thus putting him top of the pile.

In fact no manager in the top 7 managed to get a score in one of the weeks best 10. West Ham 4 West Germany 2 stay 3rd after scoring 27 points and Luadjemba stay 5th after notching 20. 5th and 6th places - Tatters top tips (30) and Lets all beat the Gooners (29) - were also unchanged but Ping Pong Yo-Yo are up to 7th.

Down at the bottom, there was similar tauper as only Happy Hammers and Woody's Warriors swapped places. Idiots guide to soccer after picking up in the past fortnight (English to American translation - 2 weeks) had the weeks worst score of 7.

Martin still making a splash

Breaking News 8888 Week 18 scores 8888 Breaking News
Martin Singleton collected his 2nd Manager of the Week fiver in 3 weeks as Tom Finney's Splash look to end the year in a prize chasing position. Martin has climbed 15 places in less than a month and rattled in a week's best score of 48 in week 18.

Barry Plummer is another geezer looking to get amongst the challengers in the 2nd half of the season. Last week's MoW was followed up with another 44 points to move 2Infinity & Beyond up a further 3 places to 25th.

Other good efforts in a low scoring week that ended on Dec 14th were achieved by Ping Pong Yo-Yo (35), Beer Monsters (34), Robbos on Top (33) and The Elephant Man(ager) who also hit 33 points.

My kinda town

Chicago taxi drivers are the worst in the world. Admittadly I have not been in a taxi in every country in the world but I have spent a few quid on taxi's in my time.

Now I know I have been used to London cabs and one of my best mates is a black cab driver so I am biased but you can hail a cab and ask them to go to the smallest shittiest lane in the middle of West London and the cab driver will say, " Ok guv, jump in" and they will take you there. Simple as that. Ok, you might get a life story as well but the fact is they know where they are going.

Chicago cabbies do not have a fuckin Scoobies. One, they don't speak English. Not even American! Two, they ask you how to get to where you want to go. Three, they spend the whole time talking on their cell phones in a language you have never heard off. Four, the cars are shit heaps. Five, they drive like lunatics and are constantly pressing their horn and shouting abuse at other cars. Six, they normally get lost and ask you if you know where it is you want to go, "No, let me explain Mr Cab driver. I am an Insurance broker, you are a cabbie. You fucking tell me!". And Seven, they then want and expect a bloody tip.

The other day I had a raging row with a cabbie because he clearly didn't know where he was going. He took me miles out of my way and then started moaning that the roads were new. Well if you call 1871 - when the grid system was put into place after the Great Chicago Fire - new then I suppose you're right you useless twat.

Life's a beach. End of part 1.

Ready's near 2 year sojourn in Thailand comes to a sad end this week. The lovable pitt bull flies home on Thursday and will be back in London for the foreseeable future. No doubt he will be around the City catching up with old mates with plenty of stories to tell.

He has spent the last 10 days of his time holed up in a wooden hut with his young lady and her family (which includes about 4 sisters I am led to believe - fcuking lucky bastard eh?) in a small but beautiful place (get you minds out of the gutter) called Issan.

I don't have any contact details yet because he will need to get a new moby etc but Lee Baughan I am sure will be bugging him for money as soon as he lands and will know his whereabouts.

Yeading game chosen by BBC

Yeading will come to national prominence when their game against Newcastle United is shown live in BBC on Saturday 9th January. The game is now due to take place at QPR's Loftus Road after the FA agreed to move the tie from The Warren.

So there are no excuses, I want you all to get behind 'The Ding' in front of the box on what is the biggest day in their history. Ok Heppers, you are forgiven you can support Newcastle if you must!

Tartan army

For our Scottish viewers the SPL is almost exciting this season. Only a point separates Celtic & Rangers at the top of the table after 18 games and Rangers have the better goal difference with the wondefully named Nacho Novo and Dado Prso in the goals.

The season has also been noted for the improvement in the other sides. Aberdeen and Hibernian in particular are playing some good football. They met on Saturday and 10-man Hibs came out victors at a packed Easter Road to close the gap on the third-placed Aberdeen to four points.

Hibs are managed by ex Ipswich centre half Tony Mowbray and people are already talking about him becoming one of Britain's best young coaches.

At the bottom of the table it is very tight with just 3 points between the bottom 5 clubs.

For those of you interested Falkirk are way ahead at the top of Division 1, although the SPL has become a bit of a closed shop in recent years so calm yourselves down you Falkirk fanatics.

Just a thought....

Manager of the Week
It's not bad value for 25 quid is it? For those of you that have paid anyhow. Just look at the Manager of the Week awards. We have had 15 winners so far this season. Only Lee Day - who won it three times in the first six weeks has won it more than once. For a full list of winners see the 2nd page of the Latest Table.

Ready's Bangkok Bet
The 3rd Round of the FA Cup will soon be upon us and this is another chance to win some prize money. For those of you new to the N&R FL, basically we offer you a free bet to guess to score of each of the 3rd Round matches. Ready has a formula for working out the scoring and the manager with the most points wins 25 notes (or $ equivalent).

Ready of course will soon be back in sunny Benfleet so I suppose we will have to change the name to 'The Benfleet Bet' or something. Doesn't quite have the same ring (sic) does it?

We will release a list of the games with the entry form soon. Look out for it.

The Plumm-ing's now working

Breaking News 8888 Week 17 scores 8888 Breaking News
Anyone remember Barry Plummer? The bloke who won the title in 2002/3, came 2nd in 2003/4 and has spent the first 16 weeks of 2004/5 in the bottom half of the table - even at one point reaching his lowest ever position. Well the Plummer is back! 2Infinity & beyond won the MoW award in week 17 by scoring 61 points and we wonder here at N&R HQ if this is the little acorn.

Another pre season Championship contender was Paul Kelleher. PK amongst other more lurid activities takes the FL quite seriously but Filthy Love have had a very slow and non descript first third of the campaign. However I see another acorn. Paul scored 59 and move 3 places up the table.

Who else? Oh yeah, Alan Oakley. A previous big prize winner has also been finding it tough this season but Better than 2nd managed their best score (54) since August and jump up a few places.

Other excellent week's were from teams we have come to expect it from. Ginger (not so) Athletic stretched their lead at the top of the table to 5 points after scoring 57. Wenners Wannabe's were 3 worse of with 54.
West Ham 4 West Germany 2 hit another 57 points to close the gap a little on the top 2.

Other teams worth a mention in week 17? Keep the faith hit 52 and climb 4 places and You got more toes had a long overdue good week getting the same score.

6th Mark's the spot

Breaking News 8888 Week 17 scores 8888 Breaking News
Lets all best the Gooners leapt like a salmon in week 17 to a season high 6th place. Mark who has only one week in the top 10 to show so far this season clattered a mighty 59 points whilst Tatters top tips are now in 5th after scoring 55.

Elsewhere in the top 10 Back home & Ping Pong Yo-Yo lost ground whilst Sweaty did shag shemales climbed to 8th. Lamb to the slaughter have reappeared in the pink zone after an absence of a week. Glenn scoring 53 points.

Liz Keiller has - to most people's surprise - spent all but 4 weeks in the top 10 this season. Make that 5 now as She fell over slumped to 24 points and dropped 6 places to 12th. One to watch is the inconsistent Neil Cryer. Dale Allstars hit 51 points to rise to 14th from 18th.

The Young Americans

Breaking News 8888 Week 17 scores 8888 Breaking News
Brian Dougal and Tim Felbruegge are getting the hang of this game. In week 17 they both hit their best ever weekly score. Cheeky American's notching 50 points and Idiots guide to soccer 43. They both remain in the last two spots but have noticably caught the other stragglers up in the last couple of weeks. Tim is now only 15 points behind Defoe's golden XI - last week the difference was 34.

Brian & Tim will both have their eyes on Can I get a waistcoat, Tom Finney's splash and Herecomethewildebeestes who have all put runs together in recent weeks to move out of the danger zone. In fact Martin Singleton continued their excellent early winter form by hitting another 53 points to climb another 2 places whereas Tony Hepburn also hit a half century (51 to be precise) to move up to 37th.

Back in the bottom 6, Woody's Warriors get their first taste of a grey box next to their name as they struggled to score 20 points in week 17 and crucially slip 3 places. Both Happy Hammers and Defoe's golden XI lose ground but a big mover is Californication who are out of the re-election zone for the first time in 6 weeks after Chris scored his biggest total of the season so far - 55.

The week's biggest loser was Greg Harris. Greg who has probably more important things on his mind like writing the Queen's speech, hit a lowly 15 points. Roffey's Rejects fell 6 places down the league table.

Yeading move game to QPR

What a shame that this marvellous ground will now not be used for the 3rd Round Cup game on January 9th. On Friday the FA agreed to switching Yeading's plum tie to QPR's Loftus Road for safety reasons (more) The Ding's ground, The Warren also only holds 3,500, so Loftus Road which holds almost 20,000 will allow a lot more people to see the game.

Meantime our boys have Newcastle manager Graeme Souness worried about the 3rd Round clash. After the draw Souness said: "I don't even know where Yeading is and, while I have contacts in football throughout the world, I must admit I have nothing on them."

Newcastle suffered a famous FA Cup exit at the hands of non-league Hereford in 1972 and were taken to a replay by Conference side Stevenage Borough in 1998 and Souness clearly worried went onto say: "It's a famous draw for them getting Newcastle United at home, but, while it's obviously a potential banana skin, we don't want to make them even more famous."

Road to Cardiff - Our new boys Yeading to face Geordies in 3rd Round

Not even David Brent - The Office was based in Slough - could inspire Slough Town to the 3rd Round of FA Cup and a wonderful home tie against Newcastle United. They were beaten by Ryman Premier League leaders Yeading FC last Saturday and it is now 'The Ding' (that is honestly their nickname) who we now follow on The Road to Cardiff.

It all started so well for Sluff too. GLEN HARRIS stepping up coolly to send Delroy Preddie the wrong way from the spot after just 3 minutes. Yeading gradually began to dominate the match after early Slough pressure, and had a chance to equalise when Darti Brown headed straight at goalkeeper Shaun Allaway.

The pressure was growing on the Slough goal and it was no real surprise when Yeading found themselves back on level terms on 27 minutes. A cross from Alex Stanley was headed on by Davis Haule. His header hit the bar as did DUDLEY CAMPBELL's shot from the rebound, but it was the same player who was on hand to finally poke home the equaliser.

This momentarily woke the Rebels up and they came close on two occasions in quick succession - with Harris & Murphy going close.

In the early knockings of the 2nd half Slough had a chance when captain Daly's corner was blocked by his own player. That was as good as it got for Slough as Yeading again dominated the remainder of the half. They took the lead on 52 minutes when the prolific CAMPBELL pounced to score from close range after a cross by Haule on the right.

Yeading, now buoyant after their goal had another chance soon after when former Hayes striker Errol Telemaque turned in the penalty area only to see his shot beaten away by Allaway for a corner. From the resulting corner by Stanley the away side went further ahead when HAULE was on hand to head home from close range.

The Ding comfortably held onto victory and their supporters and us look forward to the huge game at home to the Geordies.

Slough team: Allaway, Murphy, Daly, Saulisdury, Josias Carbon, Wilkinson, Metcalfe, Haddow, Harris, Hodges, Spencer (Moller 63). Subs Not Used: Steer, Seedell, Parkin, Matt Miller.
Man of the match:
Attendance: 2,418

On Yeading's official site today: After consultation today with the London Borough of Hillingdon, Metropolitan Police, London Fire Brigade and the Football Association, Yeading FC have been granted permission to host the Third Round tie with Newcastle United at The Warren, subject to final confirmation from the appropriate authorities.Crowd capacity will be limited to a total of 2,300 spectators with the match taking place on Saturday 8 January 2005, in a 12.30pm kick off. (more)

Good luck to them and I'm sure Alan Shearer et al are less than thrilled with the prospect of playing on on a mud heap at the end of an industrial estate in Hayes, Middx.

More on the mighty Ding-a-ling's soon and their 3rd Round tie against Newcastle United.

Splash back

Breaking News 8888 Week 16 scores 8888 Breaking News

What a week by Martin Singleton! He scored the season's biggest 7 day score with just one round of games played - there is no prize for this you understand, I would end up giving out prizes for everything otherwise, such as the most stoopidiest American or the broker who can drink the most Guinness before lunchtime. Tom Finney's splash whalloped 65 points and surged 10 places up the league table, leaving the re-election zone way behind.

Another punter who collected well in week 16 was Tony Murray. Hammers like coke hammered 41 points (their best in 13 weeks) and moved a further 4 places from the re-election zone. Three other good performers from the lower half of the table were Pull your finger out molly (can't believe Godders' side have been so quiet this season - they have hardly had a mention) who hit 40 points, the same as Make it a supersize who bounced back are a poor few weeks following their MoW award in week 11. Can I get a waistcoat also continued their run up the table - can Si follow in Ben Graves' steps? - after scoring 38.

Just 2 points the difference at the top

Breaking News 8888 Week 16 scores 8888 Breaking News
An excellent week for Wenners Wannabe's scoring 46 points saw them close the gap on Ginger (not so) Athletic to just 2 points as the race for Championship gathers seasonal momentum. The flying West Ham 4 West Germany 2 knocked in another 38 points to move into 3rd spot ahead of Luadjemba.

Back home, She fell over & Ping Pong Yo-Yo stay in their places as they all scored within 2 points of each other. Week 16 saw Tatters top tips climb back to 7th after tipping in with 41. Into the top 10 for the first time this season are Lets all beat the Gooners after Mark claimed the 2nd best score of the week - albeit 17 less than Tom Finney's splash.

A manager who has rekindled their team's form is Carl Dillaway. Galacticos FC rattled in 45 - their best score since August - and jump 5 places to 11th. Lamb to the slaughter, You got more toes and TBA all continue their slide's down the table.

Three managers are upwardly mobile though. They are Mike Robertson, Simon Bond & Rob Munden. Robbo's on top smacked their best score for 8 weeks of 41 and are now in 14th whilst Someone other than Arse or Man U magiced 42 and rose to 17th, up four and Rob (famously once caught by a window cleaner wanking - I love saying that) weighed in with 37 to push his Jonny on my shoulder into the top half of the table.

Brian-storm

Breaking News 8888 Week 16 scores 8888 Breaking News
Brian Dougal closed the gap on fellow Wisconsin boy Tim Feldbruegge at the foot of the table in week 16. Idiots guide to soccer scored 35, 14 more than Cheeky Americans.

Californication again look like jeopardising any chance AIG have of winning the coveted Team Challenge Trophy after they slumped again in week 16. Chris is now 3rd from bottom after Defoe's golden XI (you mark my words Mark - that Judas cnut will be off in the transfer window) climbed above them after scoring 34.

Happy Hammers floated like a fuckin elephant into the drop zone after having their worst week of the season. Just 8 points for Al. Only one 'f' in Forest followed up last week's MoW award with a respectable 27 and jump one spot.

And finally, how nice it is to see soul mates Alan Oakley and Giles Crowley together in joint 38th place. This after Giles' The elephant man(ager) scored a fine 33 points and climbed 2 places where they bumped into Al's Better than 2nd who headed the other way after suffering the week's worst score of 7. How sweet?

My kinda town

I was back in London over Thanksgiving which was fun but knackering. My Mum & Dad have now moved to Eastbourne (well 6 miles outside) and after spending half of my time in a jam jar I realised that all the people close to me live fucking miles from each other. I got back to Chicago on Tuesday night, was in work on Wednesday and then had to go to Detroit on Thursday and Friday. My body clock doesn't know what time it is but it hasn't put it off the taste for booze, which is handy as like London we are now at the start of the Christmas party season.

I have had a few visitors recently including Messrs Day & Gumbs which was fun, though not such a laugh when my alarm was going off in the morning and I had to go to work (admittedly only a 12 minute walk) whilst Gumbsy was laying in his hotel bed watching movies (he had 12 on his hotel bill when he checked out and I don't believe they were all Harry Potter!).

We did all the normal tourist things like drinking and drinking when they were here and we also had a guy from Aon Global Risks with us on an exchange at the same time so we were quite a handful armed with our English accents! Despite this wonderful piece of armour, Gumbsy still preferred the tactic of going up to ladies and holding their hand, which he denies vehemently but as the boys will back me up was true!

I really like my apartment I am renting at the moment. It's on the 36th floor with wonderful views over the city and the building has a gym (supposedly) and a swimming pool but I'm currently wrestling with the idea of buying a place because I have never been much of a renter, feeling it is throwing money away.

The weather turned whilst I was home, and has become colder and we have seen the first snowfall of the winter. The trouble with the winters here is not the cold or the snow, it is just that they can last so long with snow still likely as late as May. Now that is a depressing thought. Oh well, I think I still prefer the snow to the awful drizzle and dampness we get back home.

I will be back at Christmas and I will definitely let some of you know if I am able to pop into the City for a pint.

I am going to the Chicago Bulls game tomorrow night. Brian Dougal and I have been invited by an underwriter into one of the sky boxes at the United Center. The Bulls are shite by the way with a season record so far of won 2 and lost 12. However they have a rookie playing for them this year called Luol Deng who after arriving in the UK from the Sudan with his 9 brother and sisters in 1993 lived in Lewisham, before coming to the US to go to college - that's good enough for me. Go da Bulls.

I'm in a very good mood this Sunday evening, can't image why..... Dennis, Dennis, how much we love you so. You gotta love it haven't you?

Who, which, why? - Martin Singleton

North Ender Martin Singleton is our first guest in the Who, which, why? series. Martin manages to actually avoid answering any of the questions whatsoever but does talk about his wife, high school anal, Amy Winehouse and of course pies. There is also a wonderful response to the most annoying person question. An answer I think we can all identify with.

Thanks Martin, it's a good start to this season's fun. Please keep your entries coming.

The rise and rise of Ben Graves

Breaking News 8888 Week 15 scores 8888 Breaking News
Ben Graves is the current Daddy of the N&R FL, no doubt. Another 43 point haul for West Ham 4 West Germany 2 means that they are now into 4th place in the table. The bottom half of the table should all take heart from Ben's achievements as he was in 33rd place just 7 weeks ago and now he is hot on the heels of Ginger (not so) Athletic, Wenners Wannabe's and Luadjemba.

The top 3 in week 15 all performed well, particularly John McGowan and Doyley who both hit 34. Wenners scored 10 less. Back home got a bit of home sickness and lost ground after scoring 22 - Barry's worse score since mid September. She fell over also lost ground, Liz hit 21.

Two upward mover's were Ping Pong Yo-Yo and Sweaty will be shagging shemales (Dan, should this now be Sweaty did shag shemales?). Suzie is back in the top 7 whilst Danny jumped 2 spots. Tatters top tips and previous leader You got more toes than us, who achieved a season low of 13 points, both slide down the top 10.

The week's worst score was by Moulster's Molesters who scored a paltry 11, 2 more than Happy Hammers.

One 'f' in fiver

Breaking News 8888 Week 15 scores 8888 Breaking News
James Bird flew in to win the Manager of the Week prize in week 15. Despite the 45 points, Only one 'f' in Forest stay in the re-election zone but they do move up two places. Another struggling team that are at last getting it right is Can I get my waistcoat, who scored 41 points for the 2nd consecutive week to climb 6 places further away from the bottom of the pile.

The Elephant man(ager) had a sterling week knocking in 38 points, which was Giles' best score for 3 months. They clear the re-election area for only the 6th time this season. The wonder team of Baxter & Barrett scored 33 points to move up a place to 38th.

Other weeks worth noting were had by Flighty Feet who scored 32 and Danny's Geeza's who also notched 32.

Now then Zippy, that wasn't very nice was it?

I don't know how many of you remember Rainbow? The Yanks would never had heard of it, people like Dillaway are probably too young and old bastards like Paull & Godders were growing up before the age of television.

For those of you who don't know, Rainbow was a credible children's TV show from the 70's and 80's. This clip was actually broadcast and watched by millions. You may have already seen it but it is amazing that they got away with this. Click here to listen - don't worry about reading the script, just click on the telly screen when it downloads.

I blame my mother for allowing me to watch this and making me into the old perv that I am today.

Team Challenge - Marsh Mellow

The Marsh boys skate to the top of Team Challenge Trophy table at the end of 14 weeks of fierce competition with Aon's Casualty duo of Liz & Mike dropping to 2nd. Aon's Fac and Property teams swap places with the huge AIG contingent in 5th.

At the bottom my boys, Aon Chicago, despite my rather wonderful recent form, remain locked at the foot of the table.

James Bird's arrival at JLT means that the broker joins the competition as Boswell is already there but they start in 9th place. Good luck Birdy by the way.

The best of luck to Lee Day too who joins RSA in January. Lee's departure from Allianz means that they are withdrawn from the competition as the rules state (send a sae for copy) that 2 or more managers must work for the same company.

No holes in Cheesemakers performance

Breaking News 8888 Week 14 scores 8888 Breaking News
Ian Kennett was the surprise winner of week 14's 5 quid after knocking in easily his best score for 11 weeks. Blessed are the cheesemakers tally of 53 moved them up 8 places in the league table to 24th.

Another shocker was luscious Glasgow Kiss hitting their 2nd best effort of the season. Kirstie's 49 points meant she climbed up 7 places to 17th. Can I get a waistcoat has been steadily improving after a terrible start. Jenks' boys scored 41 points and continue their slow climb away from the re-election area. Super Eagles are up 4 spots to 30th after they collected 39, a point more than Robbos on top, West Ham 4 Germany 2 and Flighty Feet.

The weeks lowest score was 11 points courtesy of Carl Dillaway. Up until last week Galacticos FC spent the previous 6 weeks in the top 10, topping out at 5th in week 9. They are now down at 20th after an appalling display last week.

I haven't talked much about Greg Harris this season, which I'm sure pleases Greg greatly but Roffey Rejects hit an all season low in week 14 - it must be the thought of no more fox hunting sessions on a Sunday morning.

Lee Day, who I have just spent 4 days with getting totally wankered and trying to stop Gumbsy molesting young Chicagoan ladies had a dreadful week 14. You got more toes than us, who sat top of the table for 9 of the first 10 weeks, are slipping away badly.

Down at the bottom there was little change although Cheeky Americans moved away from stranded Idiots guide to soccer after an excellent 34 point week.

Tom Finneys splash are out of the bottom 6 for only the 2nd time this season. They smashed 35 points and climb above Californication, The elephant man(ager) and Defoe's Golden XI.

Ginger snap

Breaking News 8888 Week 14 scores 8888 Breaking News
Peter Doyle's Ginger (not so) Athletic inched further away from the chasing pack in week 14. 36 points took him to 491, 8 ahead of Wenners Wannabes who scored 33.

Back Home & Luadjemba stay 3rd & 4th but She fell over are up a place to 5th after scoring 35. With You got more toes and Ready's TBA in reverse the form man Ben Graves hit the top 7 for the first time after West Ham 4 West Germany 2 scored 38 points and the observant Tatters top tips are back in the top 10 after whalloping 43.

Just outside of the top 10 are Lets all beat the Gooners who scored 27, Lamb to the slaughter (28) and Beer Monsters (25).

Road to Cardiff - Slough spring shock of the round

The magic of the FA Cup is alive and well in Slough after the Rebels knocked out League One Walsall in the 1st Round on Saturday in probably the biggest shock of the round.

Eddie Denton's men looked nervous early on with the Saddlers in control. Player manager and Arsenal legend Paul Merson was running the game from midfield but after seeing off early Walsall pressure Slough took the lead on 24 minutes. IAN HODGES bundled the ball into the back of the net from close range past goalkeeper Mark Paston after a cross from Ryan Spencer.

However just 8 minutes later the Midlanders were back on level terms when DARREN WRACK was on hand to head home from close range after Allaway saved Jorge Leitao's drive.

Early in the second-half Walsall dominated possession with Slough giving the ball away far too easily, however out of the blue Slough took the lead when a cross from Alex Haddow fell to GLEN HARRIS. His shot was blocked on the line, but he was on-hand to score from the rebound.

The away side threw men forward in hope of an equaliser, but the Rebels defence superbly marshalled by skipper Steve Daly, Michael Murphy and man-of-the-match James Saulsbury kept Walsall at bay. Walsall's best chance fell to former Wolves centre-back Neil Emblen. The defenders header hit the top of the bar with the ball rebounding to safety. In the final minutes Walsall substitute Julian Bennett was sent-off for not retreating following a free-kick.

With three minutes of nail-biting injury time minutes the Rebels held on to claim a famous victory - cue wild celebrations at Stag Meadow!

Slough team: Allaway, Josias Carbon, Daly, Saulisdury, Murphy, Alex Haddow, Metcalfe, Harris (Steer 90), Wilkinson, Hodges, Spencer (Seedell 62). Subs Not Used: Moller, Matt Miller, Parkin.
Mom: Saulsbury
Attendance: 2,023

After the game Paul Merson feared he could be sacked following the shock result for Walsall who included ex Palace player Simon Osborn and had ex Addick hero Mark Kinsella on the bench.

Whilst Rebels manager Eddie Denton said: "People did not really give us any chance before the game, but I believed we could win as did the players. I've said all week we're a decent side and when we play our football we can cause any team problems."

Slough Town have a wonderful chance of progressing to the 3rd Round after being drawn at home to local rivals Yeading in the 2nd Round. The match will take place on Saturday 4 December at Windsor & Eton FC’s Stag Meadow, kicking off at 3pm.

Graves digging it

Breaking News 8888 Week 13 scores 8888 Breaking News
33rd to 8th in 5 weeks is what you call pretty good form and that's what Ben Graves is in. West Ham 4 West Germany 2 picked up their first ever N&R FL prize in week 13 after collecting the week's best score of 52 points. Liz Keiller continues to mix it with the big boys after hitting her 2nd best score of the season. She fell over jump 5 places to grab 6th place. Luadjemba are also on sparkling form. Johnny Mc scoring 37 points to move into 4th.

Meanwhile at the top of the fantasy tree Peter Doyle is the sole occupier of the top spot in week 13 after Ginger (not so) Athletic outscored Wenners Wannabes by 5 points. Doyley scoring 37 to Mark's 32. Back home remain 3rd after a 32 point week and You got more toes are unmoved at 4th after scoring 26.

In fact I am writing this just a couple of hours before Lee Day and Tony Gumbs arrive in Chicago for what I am expecting will be a quiet and cultured weekend. I have my slippers and pipe at the ready!

Tatters top tips is still showing colleague Barry Plummer the way to go after another fine week. Nigel was the 3rd best scorer with 38 points and are now in 11th. Let's all beat the Gooners are upto 13th after securing 37 points and Sweaty, who alongside Danny Rose is currently having a guided tour of Thailand with my old mucker Ready (more on that another day), climbed to 18th after Rose to be ruined by ladyboys hammered 35 points.

Elsewhere in the top 10, Danny's reposte to Lee, Sweaty will be shagging shemales drop a place to 10th whilst Keith's team TBA dropped to 7th. Galacticos drop out of the top 10 for the first time in 7 weeks - it's probably the thought of having to do the Who, Which & Why?

The biggest loser was Dougal lookalike Rob Beere who fell an astonishing 7 places in a congested top half of the table to 14th after Beer Monsters scored 18.

Rutter in freefall

Breaking News 8888 Week 13 scores 8888 Breaking News
Rutts is in freefall down the N&R FL table. Goonersmoan collected the week's worst score of 13 points and are now in 31st and is the lowest of anyone in his team which will embarrass the proud Gooner no end I am sure. Meg & Hannah's bears only scored slightly better with 15 and slip 4 places. 15 points was also the unlucky number for Happy Hammers who lose 2 places and the wet dream team of Barwick & Du Toit. Flighty feet after a good run of form crash 6 places down the league table.

There was better news for Mark Dewberry who has witnessed a knat's chuff like Spurs suddenly forget about defending and let in 8 goals in two Premiership games. Cue angst from all of those managers (like me) who signed Yid defenders thinking Santini was the new George Graham.

Mark's Defoe's (sorry, he is a cnut) Golden XI rattled in 34 points in an impressive performance to move out of the re-election zone. The Elephant man(ager) is back in it though despite scoring 27 and Califoirnication and Tom Finney's splash all lose ground. The bottom two remain the same.

Just a thought....

A cautionary tale....

A worldwide survey was conducted by the UN. The only question asked was: "Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?"

The survey was a huge failure because....

In Africa they didn't know what "food" meant.
In Eastern Europe they didn't know what "honest" meant.
In Western Europe they didn't know what "shortage" meant.
In China they didn't know what "opinion" meant.
In the Middle East they didn't know what "solution" meant.
In South America they didn't know what "please" meant.
And in the USA they didn't know what "the rest of the world" meant

Who, which & why?

This season's fantasy questionnaire is entitled Who, which & why? Everyone should be in receipt of a copy, let me know if you need another one.

For those of you who have been around for a while you will know that we do this every season with some very funny results.

I've kept it simple because I know that's how you like it. There are a number of questions followed by a list. Choose one answer and explain why.

I look forward to your replies which will appear weekly.

Wannabe startin' something

Breaking News 8888 Week 12 scores 8888 Breaking News
There's another new manager at the top of the pile after week 12. Mark Wenman hit the week's best score of 39 and joins Peter Doyle at the summit on 418 points, a clear 20 ahead of Barry Paull's Back home who reach their highest position of 3rd after whacking 31.

Wenners Wannabe's have been in the top 7 since mid September and his first prize money was well deserved after consistently hitting good scores since the opening week. Ginger (not so) Athletic's stay at the top of the league continues after they scored 27 points.

Both You got more toes than us and TBA lose ground for the 3rd consecutive week whilst Beer Monster's surge back into 7th place after hitting 26. Ping Pong Yo-Yo stay 6th whilst Galacticos FC and She fell over both lose 2 places.

If I say so myself, Nobby is on the rise (pun intended) after scoring 31 in week 12. Make it a supersize are now 20th.

Brian at a snails pace

Breaking News 8888 Week 12 scores 8888 Breaking News
The beauty of fantasy league football. Brian Dougal last week hit his season best score. 7 days later he manages his and the rest of the league's worst. Brian, deflated after 59,000,000 of his compatriots voted for a blithering idiot (click for game), then went and mustered just 3 frickin' points in week 12 - even Dubya would have scored more than that - jeez!

With Cheeky (and stupid) Americans scoring 21, Idiots guide to soccer are now 37 points adrift at the bottom of the table.

And as for Chris Waterman, you're even worse my old son. Reasonably intelligent, I always thought, Arsenal season ticket holder, father, husband, senior position at AIG and not even related to the Greenberg's! You matched Brian's weekly score of 3 points, how embarrassing. Californication slide back into the bottom 6 as Can I get a waistcoat and The elephant man(ager) profit.

Goonersmoan are also in a real rut (get it?) after scoring 6, that is just 13 points in 2 weeks - compared to colleague Ben Graves' 85 points!

These are now the season's worst weekly scores:

1. Brian Dougal, 3 points, week 12
1. Chris Waterman, 3 points, week 12
3. Mark Dewberry, 4 points, week 10
4. Brian Rutter, 6 points, week 12
5. Brian Rutter, 7 points, week 11
6. Tim Feldbruegge, 8 points, week 6

By the way Dougal, The Magic Roundabout film is released in February 2005 if you want to see yourself on the big screen. Maybe we could arrange a team outing?

There will be prizes for naming the Magic Roundabout characters after fellow fantasy league managers. Email me on simon_newport@ars.aon.com or add comments below.

Ben not in Grave danger at all

Breaking News 8888 Week 12 scores 8888 Breaking News
Ben Graves had another impressive week in the N&R FL. 36 points for West Ham 4 West Germany 2 who have climbed 18 places in 4 weeks as they make their mark in Ben's first season.

Dale Allstars scored well in week 12. Neil hit 32 points and moved up the table 4 places. 32 was also the score of Paul Kelleher. Lupo's Filthy Love climbed 2 spots to 27th. Other manager's who were having a quiet time but sprung to life in week 12 were Alan Oakley, Alex Boswell and the girlie combo of Barwick & Du Toit.

Oaker's Better than 2nd managed 31 points and clamber 2 places to 31st, a place above Alex's Meg & Hannah's bears who scored 28. Flighty Feet are stepping up the pace after a fine week. Catherine & Karen danced their way to 30 points and the top half of the table.

Road to Cardiff - Slough Town review

Slough, commonly known as Sluff are our new champions on the Road to Cardiff. Now apart from Tracey Ullman and Industrial Estates Slough has not given us much else has it? But Slough have had a football team since 1890.

The club was officially founded in 1890 after the amalgamation of the Swifts, Slough Albion and the Young Mens' Friendly Society, who between them forged a new club, Slough FC. Slough joined with Erith and Belvedere, Tottenham (for whom it hasn't got much better), Old St. Stephens, Polytechnic, Windsor and Eton, and Upton Park to play regular league football for the first time two seasons later in the Southern Alliance. See, now you know.

Here is some more interesting stuff on The Rebels:
  • The club was forced into receivership in 1991 but were rescued by ex Millwall chairman Alan Thorne.
  • They have had more recent problems after their expulsion from the Conference in 1998 due to not having enough seats in their ground.
  • Palace legend Dave Kemp and Spurs legend Graham Roberts have both been managers at Slough.
  • They played Walton & Hersham in the FA Amateur Cup final at Wembley Stadium in front of 41,000 spectators in 1973.
  • They currently play at Stag Meadow, the home of Windsor and Eton until the lease problems of their home Wexham Park are sorted out.
  • Recent times have seen Slough reach the FA Cup first round on two occasions, narrowly losing both times against Macclesfield, on penalties after forcing a replay, and North West Counties League Harrogate Railway, going down 2-1 at Wexham Park.
  • They now play in the Ryman Premier League.
  • Team colours are Amber & Black.
  • Manager is Eddie Denton
  • Team captain and defender is Steve Daly.
  • Watch out for Ian Hodges who is their most prolific striker.

Road to Cardiff - Salisbury unlucky to go out

A bumper crowd of 1,195 saw Slough Town secure a place in the FA Cup 1st Round with a hard fought 3-2 victory against Salisbury City. This means we have another team to follow in this season's Road to Cardiff.

On Saturday Slough Town will host Paul Merson's League One side Walsall. Slough, nicknamed The Rebels are currently 15th in the Ryman Premier League, a point ahead of Salisbury City. This is how Slough saw off City:

With only two minutes on the clock a free kick was harshly awarded for a foul on Darron Wilkinson 20 yards from goal and ALEX HADDOW curled an exquisite left foot shot around the wall and into the bottom corner to silence the large travelling Salisbury support.

Their silence didn’t last long however as they were back on level terms within three minutes. A cross was curled into Slough's area, ROBERT MATTHEWS climbed higher than the retreating defenders to plant a firm header down and into the net past Jake Whincup.

Slough were lucky to remain in front after a series of goalmouth scrambles with Whincup struggling to command his area amongst the tall Salisbury forwards so it was against the run of play when Town regained the lead after 16 minutes. A corner on the left was played towards the penalty spot with pinpoint accuracy by Glen Harris and was met by IAN HODGES to power the ball past Kevin Sawyer with a bullet header.

Salisbury were fired up at the start of the second half although Slough fans would have been disappointed at the way their team sat back and invited the visitors on the offense and it was no real shock when City equalised.

A long throw into the Rebels’ penalty area was flicked on and the ball struck Wilkinson high on the upper arm. Despite Slough protests that it was ball to hand rather than the other way round the spot kick was awarded and ADAM WALLACE stroked the ball to Whincup’s left as he went the other way.

The visitors had been in the ascendancy for long periods before their equaliser although it was the home side that responded better to the Salisbury goal, mounting a greater number of attacks than at any point during the second half.

As both sides pushed for a winner although it was the home side that finally settled the tie with a goal two minutes before the end of normal time. Carbon collected the ball again just outside the six-yard box, almost sitting on it as he tried to fend off challenges. Managing to get the ball out from under his feet, he found DARRON WILKINSON with a clever back heel and the left foot shot from the veteran midfielder spun into the net via the despairing outstretched hand of Kevin Sawyer.

In 5 minutes of added time Salisbury bombarded the Slough goal but The Rebel's hung on for a famous victory, made all the more sweeter when Walsall were drawn out of the hat to play them.

Man of the match : Alex Haddow

An open letter from the Home Office to the people of America

Re: Colonising the United States

An open letter from the Home Office to the people of America.

To the citizens of the United States of America, in the light of your failure to elect a suitable President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation
of your independence, effective today. Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchial duties over all states, commonwealth's and other territories. Except Utah, which she does not fancy.

Your new prime minister (The Right Honourable Tony Blair, MP for the 97.85% of you who have until now been unaware that there is a world outside your borders) will appoint a minister for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded.

A questionnaire will be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed. To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

1. You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary. Then look up "aluminium". Check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'favour' and 'neighbour', skipping the letter 'U' is nothing more than laziness on your part.

Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters. You will end your love affair with the letter 'Z' (pronounced 'zed' not 'zee') and the suffix "ize" will be replaced by the suffix "ise". You will learn that the suffix 'burgh is pronounced 'burra' e.g. Edinburgh.

You are welcome to respell Pittsburgh as 'Pittsberg' if you can't cope with correct pronunciation. Generally, you should raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. Look up "vocabulary". Using the same twenty seven words interspersed with filler noises such as "like" and "you know" is
an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. Look up "interspersed". There will be no more 'bleeps' in the Jerry Springer show. If you're not old enough to cope with bad language then you shouldn't have chat shows. When you learn to develop your vocabulary then you won't have to use bad language as often.

2. There is no such thing as "US English". We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take account of the reinstated letter 'u' and the elimination of "-ize".

3. You should learn to distinguish the English and Australian accents. It really isn't that hard. English accents are not limited to Cockney, upper-class twit or Mancunian (Daphne in Frasier). You will also have to learn how to understand regional accents - Scottish dramas such as
"Taggart" will no longer be broadcast with subtitles. While we're talking about regions, you must learn that there is no such place as Devonshire in England. The name of the county is "Devon". If you persist in calling it Devonshire, all American States will become "shires" e.g.
Texasshire, Floridashire, Louisianashire.

4. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast British actors as the good guys. Hollywood will be required to cast British actors to play British characters. British sit-coms such as "Men Behaving Badly" or "Red Dwarf" will not be re-cast and watered down for a wishy-washy
American audience who can't cope with the humour of occasional political incorrectness.

5. You should relearn your original national anthem, "God Save The Queen", but only after fully carrying out task 1. We would not want you to get confused and give up half way through.

6. You should stop playing American "football". There is only one kind of football. What you refer to as American "football" is not a very good game. The 2.15% of you who are aware that there is a world outside your borders may have noticed that no one else plays "American" football. You will no longer be allowed to play it, and should instead play proper football. Initially, it would be best if you played with the girls. It is a difficult game. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which is similar to American "football", but does not
involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like nancies).

We are hoping to get together at least a US rugby sevens side by 2005. You should stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the 'World Series' for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.15% of you are aware that there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. Instead of baseball, you will be allowed to play a girls' game called "rounders" which is baseball without fancy team strip, oversized gloves, collector cards or hotdogs.

7. You should declare war on Quebec and France, using nuclear weapons if they give you any merde. The 97.85% of you who were not aware that there is a world outside your borders should count yourselves lucky. The Russians have never been the bad guys. "Merde" is French for "shit".

You will no longer be allowed to own or carry guns. You will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous in public than a vegetable peeler. Because we don't believe you are sensible enough to handle potentially dangerous items, you will require a permit if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

8. July 4th is no longer a public holiday. November 2th will be a new national holiday, but only in Britain. It will be called "Indecisive Day".

9. All American cars are hereby banned. They are crap and it is for your own good. When we show you German cars, you will understand what we mean. All road intersections will be replaced with roundabouts. You will start driving on the left with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.

10. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips. Fries aren't even French, they are Belgian though 97.85% of you (including the guy who discovered fries while in Europe) are not aware of a country called Belgium. Those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called "crisps". Real chips are thick cut and fried in animal fat. The traditional accompaniment to chips is beer which should be served warm and flat. Waitresses will be trained to be more aggressive with customers.

11. As a sign of penance 5 grams of sea salt per cup will be added to all tea made within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, this quantity to be doubled for tea made within the city of Boston itself.

12. The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all, it is lager. From November 1st only proper British Bitter will be referred to as "beer", and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as "Lager". The substances formerly known
as "American Beer" will henceforth be referred to as "Near-Frozen Knat's Urine", with the exception of the product of the American Budweiser company whose product will be referred to as "Weak Near-Frozen Knat's Urine". This will allow true Budweiser (as manufactured for the last 1000 years in Pilsen, Czech Republic) to be sold without risk of confusion.

13. From December 1st Britain will harmonise petrol (or "Gasoline" as you will be permitted to keep calling it until April 1st 2005) prices with the former USA. Britain will harmonise its prices to those of the former USA and the Former USA will, in return, British petrol prices (roughly $6/US gallon - get used to it).

14. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not adult enough to be independent. Guns should only be handled by adults. If you're not adult enough to sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist then you're not grown up enough to handle a gun.

15. Please tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us crazy. Tax collectors from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all revenues due (backdated to 1776).

Thank you for your cooperation.

Premiership Plus

With almost a third of the season gone already (scary eh?) it's about time N&R gave some thought to the Premiership season so far.

Arsenal, after looking like they were going to run away with the title undeafeated, suddenly lost. A piece of pizza and a bowl of Heinz minestrone was thrown and they haven't won since, drawing to what would have once been the easy fodder of Southampton & Crystal Palarse. Meanwhile the Chel$ea dream chugs on. Top of their Champions League group and now 2 points clear at the top of the Prem. Is this going to be the first time in 10 years that someone other than Arse & Man U win the title (Bondy will get his wish)?

Behind the top 2 are not Man Utd, Liverpool or Newcastle but Rooney less Everton, Bolton, Middlesbrough and Aston Villa. All four have had wonderful starts.

Everton are all about hard work, conceding just 11 goals. Bolton are brimming with confidence and look like they can beat anyone on their day, Boro's 'free' transfer signings of Viduka, Hasselbaink and Boudewijn Zenden are all doing the business and maybe after spending about a zillion pounds on wages Boro can join the elite? I did say maybe.

As for Villa, David O'Leary is proving he is a good manager, I thought he did a good job at Leeds too but his record was tarnished by all the financial doings.

Newcastle have lost their last two matches and the honeymoon period is now over for Graeme Souness and it will be interesting to see how they respond this week with Chelsea in the Carling Cup on Wednesday and United in the League on Sunday.

Liverpool are just too inconsistent. At times, expecially offensively they look like the old Liverpool, then they go and lose at home to Birmingham who had won just one game all season. Even sick note scored!

United have massive fire power - Van Nis, Rooney, Saha, Smith, Forlan (okay I'm joking about Forlan) but this is a team in transition and maybe Europe or the Cups is their best chance of glory but the squad is so young that the United dynasty is only resting and will be back.

Pompey, the Addicks, Fulham on the back of two great results and Man City sit around midtable followed by Tottenham - who I must admit thought would be top of the table by now because they are so good!

Birmingham, despite splashing big money in the summer, have had a poor start to the campaign but had a real confidence boost after their first win at Anfield in 25 years on Saturday. Palarse are now 4 games unbeaten (3 in the league) and if they can keep Andy Johnson through the 4 weeks of January then they have a great chance of staying up.

There has been plenty of talk about Charlton & Curbishley among Addicks fans but the Curbs out minority need look no further than the bottom four places in the table. Three of the sides West Brom, Southampton & Blackburn have all sacked or lost their managers this season and although it is too early to tell if Bryan Robson (the expected new manager of the Baggies....well he did such a great job at Bradford didn't he?) will move WBA up the table, it certainly is food for thought for over expectant fans and chairman alike. Watch out Spurs, the omens are not good!

My kinda town

Well the day has finally arrived, election day. It seems like the whole time I have been in the States everyone has been banging on about it. God knows what I am going to watch on television tomorrow night? I guess I could always tune into the new series of The Swan.

The polls opened on the East Coast at 6am (5 hours behind the UK) and the last booth will close in Alaska tonight at around 6am GMT. Analysts predict the biggest turnout for 40 years, approximately 1.25m people which is 75% of the total illegible to vote and I am told the queues at polling stations are huge. In fact returning from getting my lunch a moment ago I had this ridiculous conversation with a guy who recognised me from the hour long line at Irving Park this morning. He asked me how long I waited and what time I got there and we talked about how amazing it all was.

Of course it wasn't me, I can't vote I'm just a poor British bloke who thinks they are all mad but hey I didn't have the heart to tell him.

Can Pete go like a rabbit?

Breaking News 8888 Week 11 scores 8888 Breaking News
Week 11 witnessed the season's 3rd table topper when Pete Doyle's Ginger (not so) Athletic stormed into 1st place above You got more toes than us after scoring 46 points. Old Ginger Rabbit used to be re-election fodder up until a couple of season's ago and was unlucky last year not to win a prize after being in and around the top ten for long periods of the season so it will be interesting to see if he has got the stamina (of a rabbit, perhaps) to stick around.

After Doyley's climb of 3 places, Wenners Wannabe's & TBA all slip a spot whilst Back Home had another good one scoring 41 points. Barry has been very consistent this season scoring around the 30-40 mark most weeks and is now in season high of 5th.

Luadjemba drop another 2 places to 8th after managing just 24 and Glenn Francis' Lamb to the slaughter are finding it tough at the minute, 25 points meant another drop of 2 places to 12th. Glenn was 6th a month ago.

Gains for She fell over, back in the top 10 after scoring 36, Beer Monsters who move up 3 places after hitting 37 and Lets all beat the gooners (well you got your wish Mark) who have started to make an impact on this season's competition for the first time. 13th now, a climb of 16 places in 5 weeks for the Cockney (well Croydon) Red.

Supersize me up

Breaking News 8888 Week 11 scores 8888 Breaking News
Hehe, this is what it is all about. Watch out you lot at the top Nobby's season has started. Make it a supersize top scored in week 11 after rattling in 50 points and moved into a title threatening 25th place, 78 points behind the leader Ginger (not so) Athletic. Now all I need to do is avoid picking anymore Charlton tossers and the title is insight.

Another manager we have heard very little about is new boy Ben Graves. Ben works in Global Risks for young Mr Rutter and has had a inconspicuous start to the season. However in week 11 Ben's West Ham 4 Germany 2 (can't believe you Hammers boys still bang on about this) hit 49 big ones and sauntered 8 places into the top half of the table.

The rather sexy duo of Barrett & Baxter were also having a quiet time in the lower reaches of the table but 46 points moved Woody's Warriors further away from the drop zone.

The sweatmeister also did well last week, Rose to be ruined by a ladyboy whacked 41 points and climbed 4 places. Two other sides also gained some ground. Bondy's Someone other than Arse or Man U scored 40 and Moulsters' Molesters scored 39 and are now in 16th and 29th respectively.

After last weeks appalling score of 4 points, Mark Dewberry deserves some credit for bouncing back in week 11 with 37 points with the same team which just shows the nature of the game. Defoe's golden XI improve one place.

And bugger me sideways Brian Dougal's Idiots guide collected far and away their best score of the season, knocking in 37 points to close the gap on countryman Tim Feldbruegge to 19 points. Tim's Cheeky Americans scored 29.

Plummer reaches all time low

Breaking News 8888 Week 11 scores 8888 Breaking News
Brian Rutter is heading for a re-election battle unless he arrests Goonersmoan slide down the table. In the top 10 5 weeks ago, Rutts is now down to 19th after scoring week 11's lowest score of 7 points - the 2nd worst of the season. Another suprise is the dreadful start by 2Infinity & beyond. For the 4th time in 9 scoring week's Barry scored under 25 points and they sink 8 places to 31st and without looking at the record books that is probably his lowest ever position.

John Tiernan may need to get his head out from under Dipak's skirt because he is also heading in the wrong direction. A season low of 18 points in week 11 saw Super Eagles drop 7 to 37th.

Meanwhile in the bottom 6, Can I get a waistcoat moved above the drop zone for the first time since the first week of the season and Tom Finney's splash were back in the mire after leaving it for 7 whole days.
