We wuz Robbed

Breaking News 88888 Manager of week 18
A second MoW award for Rob Munden. That is Rob, Paul Kelleher, Aaron Barden and Alex Boswell (I know how ridiculous is that?) that have each won more than two weekly fivers. What about the rest of us, you greedy bastards?

Rob knocked up a nifty 56 clear of any competition. Next up was my little kilted Glaswegian Kirsty Baillie, followed by my little Folkstonian Ian Kennett. Lee Day, not little in the slightest (allegedly) was next.

Other managers deserving a round of Christmas cheer was Steve Black, Helen Peters, Mark Simmons, Mark Wenman, and hang on can that be right? Lee Baughan.

The week 17 lowest score was handsomely achieved by Rob Beere.

Tally-ho ho ho

Breaking news 8888 Division 1 - week 18 news
Well it was coming for a while. Paul Kelleher's Tally.Wacker.co.uk go to the summit of the N&R FL for the first time this season and their odds were slashed by Paddy Powder to 6/5 to win the title for the first time.

PK has been knocking on the door for a number of weeks now and now lead Ajax Treesdown by 3 points. The over major change in top title race was Inter Thepub re-entering the top 7. Coming from behing again taking their turn to be in 8th.

In Tatters and Pure Irish are close on the rails, both yet to appear in the top 7. One of last season's surprise packages Tora Tora Torres are improving as are the experienced NY Eagles.

In the relegation dogfight Glasgow kiss och-ayed her way out of the bottom leaving Space Badgers to lick their wounds. Herr Oakers remains rooted to the bottom of Div 1 after 18 weeks.

Fuddy marvellous

Breaking news 8888 Division 2 - week 18
The top 8 promotion rivals remained unchanged in week 18. There was a bit of bed hopping but nothing unusual for the season.

The man in form though is dear Sweaty. PLG is a Fud are now 11th after another fine week. The Last train to Seaford is chugging along nicely in 12th whilst Wizzis Wonders continued their yo-yo season. Goonersmoan had a better week and Prestonite Muchas Empanadas also sit better off after the round 18 of scores.

On the downward spiral though are the absolutely frigging useless Nob's Jockeys. Rochdale at Lloyds, Premiership here we come and Emirates FC also lost ground.

Catch up

Not for the first time I'm playing a bit of catch up. I could make excuses but frankly none of you are worth it!

Anyway you are probably all hungover, still drunk or waking up in a wrong bed. Nope I don't miss those days at all. Why would I when I can drink iced tea and eat burgers and be so fat that I need a seat-belt extension on a plane? Jealous, huh?

Week 17 is below, week's 18 and 19 to follow by the end of the week, hopefully. If by the way you want to share any dark secrets of Christmas party shenanigans, then do tell. I heard about Ryan, and Francey and Kennett. But what about Helen or Hilary or Suzie?

Come on let me in. All I have here is a Miller Lite for company....

More Brits

I had lunch with John Prowse last week, for you that know him. He too is moving to the Windy City to attempt to run Allianz's foray back into the US domestic casualty market. Good luck to him.

It was nice to see a friendly face and I am sure that I will see him again, especially since Allianz in Chicago have recently employed two other Brits to add to fellow N&R FL manager Michael Stout, who has been in Chicago longer than me.

By the way Lee, John offered to put you and PK up when you come over next year, so I can ditch looking into a hotel for you!

Transfers - again!

Just another gentle reminder that during the Christmas period Ready will be in Thailand shagging, I will be in Chicago.... shagging.. obviously but the old N&R FL transfer machine will still swing into action.

Just send me an email at simon_newport@ars.aon.com and I will action the changes immediately. Just please make sure that you have the players already you want to sell, you have no more than 11 players and you do not spend over 50mill plus you have enough transfer opportunities left. Easy, eh. Well you would think so, but I dealing with bloody insurance people here.

The deadline, as always is 5pm Tuesday. I thank you.

PK adds to his Tallywacker

Breaking News 88888 Manager of week 17
Paul Kelleher swept to his 3rd MoW in week 17 with a chunky 69 points, which also cracked the best season score. Aaron Barden was next up and then there was a little gap down to Ryan Saveall and colleague Huw Thomas.

A point less than the Blackham boys was Dom Barrett and John McGowan. Close behind them were Ben Graves and Barry Plummer. Also worth a mention in dispatches were Hilary Ryan and Helen Peters.

The owner of the week's worst score was Brian Rutter.

Best weekly score - top 10

Paul Kelleher hit the jackpot in week 17 and is currently in line of the 25 quid end of season award. Here are the top 10 weekly scores so far this season:

1. Paul Kelleher, week 17, 69 points
2. Mark Simmons, week 14, 68 points
3. Davor Duvancic, week 14, 66 points
4=. Paul Kelleher, week 9, 65 points
4= Aaron Barden, week 17, 65 points
6= Greg Foulger, week 9, 63 points
6= Barry Plummer, week 9, 63 points
8= Paul Kelleher, week 7, 61 points
8= Barwick & Higgs, week 9, 61 points
10= Ian Kennett, week 9, 60 points
10= Ben Graves, week 14, 60 points

Huw Dunnit

Breaking news 8888 Division 2 - week 17 news
Welsh league side Get him Big Dave hot a season-high score to clamber into 2nd place, a climb of 3 places. Huw had a quick start, but shot his bolt early (I will ignore a cheap sheep shagging joke at this point) and disappeared before storming back into contention in week 17.

Boys on Tour still lead the way but lower down Barretts the Bollocks also moved up to 4th, Dom's highest place since August.

There wasn't much change otherwise except for PLG is a Fud moving up a couple of spots. Near the bottom Red Bull Ginger improved their chances as did Wizzis Wonders. Goonersmoan meanwhile after a season-low score fell 7 places in the table.

Smell the bacon

Breaking news 8888 Division 1 - week 17 news
The top 3 remain unaltered in week 17. Egg & (Stevie) Bacon close in on the top three and move to 4th. Runningoutofroubles FC gain a place to 5th, whilst Mark Simmons Coming from behing again are back into 7th.

Hilary's Pure Irish make up some ground as do Space Badgers but Ready's Hannoi Utd slip to within 14 points of the relegation places as does Little Red Devils.

Congratulations

Belated Congratulations to ex-N&R fantasy manager Brian Dougal. He and his lovely bird got married a couple of weeks ago in Wisconsin. I was there and I must say brats and beer works incredibly well as a wedding dinner. Later in the evening the wedding party was invaded by pilgrims and turkeys, a traditional Wisconsin event I was led to believe.

I work with Dougal and obviously give him loads of stick, why wouldn't I? Unfortunately his girlfriend, now wife, banned him from taking part in this season's N&R FL just like she has stopped him going out and eating red meat. But don't worry I have given him a name of a good divorce lawyer.

Just Fab

An Italian breath of fresh air, if that is not a non-sequitur blew into the dusty old halls of the FA today. Fabio Capello doesn't actually start work until January 7th, so he will miss out on his Christmas bonus and the FA's Christmas party, although how some sherry and a game of crown bowls can be called a party I'm not sure.

I watched an excerpt earlier of his unveiling and was impressed. My he can already speak Italian. How clever is that? If Tony Adams joins the coaching staff then he will be playing the piano by the time we meet Switzerland on February 6th.

I suggested Capello the day after McClaren was fired and although back in the day I like others clamored for an English coach, I can't face another book by Curbishley or seeing Shearer's face like a smacked arse after each excruciating defeat to countries with populations the same size as Kansas City.

Capello is a winner. 14 titles have come under his tutelage and more importantly he takes no shit, and apparently does not have a penchant for young blonde actresses.

I'm pleased, I rarely get moved by anything the national teams does (the odd penalty shoot-out aside) and I feel a little skip in my step tonight as an Englishman.

"I believe that being the manager of England is obviously different from club management. It's easier to be strict when you have the players every day. As I will only have them occasionally, my behaviour will have to change. As will theirs - because wearing the national jersey is very important. I believe that English people and footballers have a will to win and a love for their country. It's just a question of getting it out of them. I really hope to be the man who can do that."

Road to Wembley - Albion taken for a Burton

Nigel Clough's Burton Albion were knocked out of the FA Cup following a replay at Underhill. The Brewers reign comes to an end and now Nobby & Ready will put their combined weight behind Barnet, who are now only 6 rounds away from the Final!

Barnet left it late though and had to ride their luck at times with Burton often taking the game to their league rivals. They hit the bar in the 2nd half and also had a goal disallowed but despite dominating possession, some indecisiveness following a corner allowed ADAM BIRCHALL to tap in the winner.

Barnet will play Swindon away in the 3rd Round on January 5th.

Team Challenge - Miami and Vice

The RSA boys of Lee and Greg remain top of the N&R Team Challenge, despite them being on opposite sides of the Atlantic. They are 10.5 points ahead of new entrants Lockton, who now have Howard Grace in their ranks.

In 3rd are the huge team from AIG with Francey slowing down their progress. Behind them are current champion's Layton Blackham and in 5th are BMS.

The in-form team though are Aspen, who rise 5 places to joint 5th. Both Dom and and Plums are making good ground in Div 2. In 7th place, up from 9th is Allianz, with Black and Stout rapidly improving.

Down to 8th are Lloyds with new neighbours Willis in 9th. Barry Paull is single handidly steering the Ex-Pats, with both Nobby and Mutley useless. 11th are the Grace-less Aon Re with Aon USA on 12th and last.

The Team Challenge Trophy table is attached to the week 16 scores email.

Luvvies jubblies

Breaking News 88888 Manager of week 16
Alex Byatt turned in another good week of scores, this time the best out of the 55 managers to win the week 16 MoW award. Alex is still in the bottom 8 of Div 1 but the future is byatter (ouch!).

Ben Graves pushed his team back into title contention after scoring 49 and then in Div 2, Danny Rose notched 44 points, the same as Aaron Barden. Paul Kelleher kept up the pressure with 41 and 40 was the optimum number for both Mark Wenman and colleague Shay Reddy.

4 was the week's lowest score, suffered by the struggling Steve Black and Glenn Francis.

Glasgow gloom

Breaking news 8888 Division 1 - week 16 news
Another week at the summit for Ajax Treesdown, in fact the next 3 all stay the same. In 5th is Egg & (Stevie) Bacon, back in the title race. Runningoutofroubles FC and Inter thepub swap places whilst Coming from behing again slip out.

Obafemi & the Femidoms climb over Oldham Tightly and a bit further down Obeonekanobenil move out of the relegation places for the first time since the middle of October. Pure Irish also make good ground but going the wrong way are Space Badgers and Kirstie's Glasgow kiss, in the bottom 8 for the first time this season after being in 2nd after week 2. Keep the faith slip nearer to the bottom as Lamb to the slaughter faltered as MoW Lovejoy's luvvies started their comeback in fine style

Arsene keeps on plucking

Breaking news 8888 Division 2 - week 16 news
Arsene Knows a thing or two about plucking young boys from the African and French leagues and yes, I did say plucking. Danny Rose knows a thing or two about drinking and fantasy football, he's probably been doing this shit since it first started a number of years ago. Danny's side moved back into 2nd in Div 2 after a fine week scoring 44 points and probably drinking as many pints in the process.

Boys on Tour stay top for the 5th consecutive week and Get him big Dave improve their promotion prospects as does Barretts the Bollocks and little minx Helen's Hotties. I of course do not know Helen, but I am quite a whiz around the internet!

Peeking lower down, no we have stopped talking about Helen, Rob Beere's sponsored Emirates FC make some ground as did Last train to Seaford.

At the arse end, no we have honestly moved on, the bottom 3 remain the same but Muchas Empanadas and Wizzi's Wonders all slip towards it.

Road to Wembley - Burton take it in their stride

Burton Albion's long-serving Darren Stride snatched a late equaliser with his first touch after coming on as sub to keep the non-league side's third round dreams alive with a 1-1 draw against Barnet.

The centre-half was thrown on as an emergency striker as Clough's side trailed and he did the trick with an 86th-minute leveller. Burton's late show came despite the fact that their League One visitors had dominated throughout from the moment Neal Bishop caught them cold by slamming a fifth minute header against the crossbar.

Barnet grabbed the goal their impressive opening deserved when LIAM HATCH met Adam Birchall's 19th minute cross with a volley which nestled in the bottom corner of the net from 12 yards.

The Brewers were thrown a lifeline on the stroke of half-time when Shaun Harrad was tugged in the area by Sagi Burton only for Barnet's weak penalty to be saved by Lee Harrison.

DARREN STRIDE rescued a replay for Burton, firing home at the back post after John McGrath had wriggled to the left hand by-line.

Barnet finished the game with 10 men after Nicky Nicolau was sent off for a second bookable offence. The replay will be next week and the winners will travel to Swindon in Round 4.

Burton team: Poole, Brayford, Greaves, James (Stride 85), Webster, Corbett, Simpson, McGrath, Gilroy, Harrad, Goodfellow (Edwards 64).
Subs Not Used: Deeney, Austin, Farrell.

My kinda town

What is it with the clamour for a flu vaccine here? Personally I would rather have my leg chopped off than have to queue for ages to have someone stick a needle in me. It seems as if everyone gets one here. "Come on, we're going to lunch and going to get a flu jab while we're at it." Er, no thanks.

Signs sit in shop windows: 'Get your shoes rehealed and a flu-jab while you wait.' Honestly! That does remind me that my Green Card process means that I have to have all of my vaccinations up to date. That will not be a pleasant day in the Chicago Addick household, that is for sure.

A Green Card has been proposed to me by my company, in fact it was proposed a while ago, it's just that it's taken me ages to trawl through the hundreds of pages of questions. But a Green Card is a good idea, whether long-term I stay here or not because it gives me more freedom particularly regarding employment and coming in and out of the country at any stage in the future. It also doesn't insist on me giving up my British passport, not that I would have anyway. Neither does it mean I have to take the Oath of Citizenship, you know the bit about "absolutely and entirely renouncing all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign sovereignty" or "that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States, so help me God" etc, etc.

Anyway these were the kind of questions that I was asked in the green card:

1) Have you ever within the past 10 years engaged in prostitution or procured anyone for prostitution, or intend to engage in such activities in the future?
2) Have you ever engaged in, conspired to engage in, or do you intend to engage in, or have you ever solicited membership or funds for, or have you through any means every assisted or provided any type of materials support to, any person or organization that has ever engaged or conspired to engage, in sabotage, kidnapping, political assassination, hijacking, or any other form of terrorist activity?
3) Have you ever engaged in any unlawful commercialized vice, including, but not limited to, illegal gambling?
4) Did you, during the period March 23, 1933 to May 8, 1945, in association with either the Nazi Government of Germany or any organization or government associated or allied with the Nazi Government of Germany, ever order, incite, assist or otherwise participate in the persecution of any person because of race, religion, nationality, ethnic origin, or political opinion?
5) Do you plan to practice polygamy in the U.S.?

I'm struggling with 3). Question 5) is a definite no, as I'm still paying for the first one. 4) I think I pass purely because of my age. I'd have to check my work contract for question 2) and 1) I'm not ruling out in the future but if I have in the past, it wasn't very lucrative!

The England job odds

It has been called the proudest job and the worst job in football. Everyone thinks they could do, few could although even Tim Feldbruegge would be better than 2nd choice Steve. Change is needed though. Here are the bookies choice with my comments next to them:

9-2 Martin O’Neill Does he really want it? The FA overlooked him before remember.
9-2 Jose Mourinho Has made it clear that he wants to be a club manager. Not a typical FA yes man.
7-1 Fabio Capello My tip. Out of work, experience with a daunting media in Italy and Spain.
12-1 Luis Felipe Scolari Despite ongoing problems with Portugese FA, don't think he would fancy The Sun camping in his garden.
14-1 Sam Allardyce He was very outspoken about the FA's selection process last time. Think he thinks he can be at Newcastle for a while and succeed. Hahaha....
14-1 Guus Hiddink Why would he give up the luxury of being King of Russia?
14-1 Alan Shearer Don't make me friggin' laugh.
20-1 Marcello Lippi Not working since resigning as Italian boss after world cup victory. Can't see him being interested, only ever worked in Italy.
22-1 Stuart Pearce Interesting one. I think he would have a lot more stock with fans and media.
25-1 Harry Redknapp Undoubtably has been a great club manager but England? Really?
25-1 Arsene Wenger My first choice along with 50 odd million others, except perhaps Spurs fans. Only problem is, is that he would be forced to pick Englishmen. Oh.
28-1 Alan Curbishley I wonder if he would have done better than McClaren? Think he too would struggle with media attention.
33-1 Steve Coppell Fair choice. Good age for it, maybe coming to the end of his Reading job.
1,000-1 Prince William Why not? Probably understands the game better than Brian Barwick!

Rant over

What a loap of crap. I have heard Gerrard on television say that it was unfortunate and the 2nd half was a big improvement, he is the kind of prick that we don't need anymore. As for McClaren who spent the whole game sheltered under an umbrella, while his opposite number passionately patrolled the touchline, well he's now gone and so he should but was it his fault that he got appointed in the first place? His tenure was tainted as soon as the FA fucked up the whole interview process last summer.

Nonetheless my real grievance wass with the players. How many of those that wore the English shirt gave a shit? The bench, Beckham aside looked non-plussed. James was cracking jokes, Terry was bored, how much does John Terry really care about playing for England? And Gerrard, the captain, cares more about the next Champions League match than having the annoyance of playing football next summer.

The players are are so removed from the football fans in the country, what each of us will go through next June will not bother the majority of these overpaid prima-donna's one bit. The pandering to the few 'decent' players in our country and the complete dominance of 4 sides, who primarily look abroad for young players is killing the competitiveness and the attachment to the national team.

The only upside of our desperate failure is the hope of change but as I said yesterday I have no confidence in the people that laughingly run our game to implement it. When Prince William goes to an England rugby international, he is sat up in the stands, at an England football game, he is sat next to Brian Barwick. What the hell has happened to our game?

Croatia beat us twice, and deservedly so. We are not good enough plain and simple. A precocious coach would have changed it after 15 minutes. The defence was appalling. Crouch, who was only player to start to come out of the game with any credit cannot get in the Liverpool first team. Substitutes Defoe and Bent are 3rd and 4th choice strikers at a club near the bottom of the Premiership.

We need to start again, I actually feel for players like Beckham and Owen because they appear to actually care and were both inculpable. Personally I would like to see Beckham get his 100th cap but otherwise lets get the big broom out and start again. The golden generation? Don't make me laugh.

Mark it up

Breaking News 88888 Manager of week 14
Mark Simmons swept the week 14 best score and his 68 points was enough to take him to the top of the best weekly score of the season table. Davor Duvancic stunned the fantasy world by scoring 66, the 2nd best of the season, and once again climbed the table.

Behind these two were Ben Graves (60), Paul Hargis (58) and then 3 manager's each notching 57 - Paul Kelleher, Aaron Barden and Mark Dewberry. John McGowan and Dominic Barrett scored 56 and Div 2 struggler Steve Black 55.

Best weekly scores:
1. Mark Simmons, week 14, 68 points
2. Davor Duvancic, week 14, 66 points
3. Paul Kelleher, week 9, 65 points
4= Greg Foulger, week 9, 63 points
4= Barry Plummer, week 9, 63 points
6= Paul Kelleher, week 7, 61 points
6= Barwick & Higgs, week 9, 61 points
8= Ian Kennett, week 9, 60 points
8= Ben Graves, week 14, 60 points
10. Paul Hargis, week 14, 58 points

The lowest week 14 score was Brian Rutter's 17.

Stronger than dirty feet

Breaking news 8888 Division 1 - week 14 news
Flighty Feet turned their ankle in week 14 dropping back two places to 3rd, their lowest place since early October. This meant that Ajax Treesdown are out on their own by 6 points.

This is a very tight league, Tally.Wacker.co.uk are in 2nd and Sleepless Knights move up to 4th. Coming from behing again are upto 6th from 8th whilst Egg & (Stevie) Bacon fall out of the top 7 for the first time this season, despite an excellent week proving how close the top of the table is.

Lower down Tora Tora Torres are aiming higher after a season best weekly score and with sights even higher are Glenn Francis' Lamb to the slaughter and Davor's Dinamo Ilegalna Imigrant, who both hit superb scores to improve their chances of escaping relegation and who knows, maybe making their way towards the top of the table.

Gregory's pecker up

Breaking news 8888 Division 2 - week 14 news
Boys on Tour currently are the best team in the N&R FL, fact. No one has more points than the Miami based Greg and he only began in Div 2 because he was a newby. He is showing us all that he is a force to be reckoned with and will no doubt be up there when it comes to the big prize money at season end. Adding another 49 points to his total means he is now 39 points ahead of Student Uprising, who themselves moved into their highest place of the season. Chris too, is in his first N&R season. Arsene Knows on the flip side are oldstagers, Danny being around since the first ever N&R FL in 1996/97 when alongside Peter Godfrey he won it.

Earlier leader Megan & Hannah's Bears are back in 4th, with Get him Big Dave up to 5th. Another previous champion 2Infinity & Beyond are 6th with Barretts the Bollocks, one of only 3 managers out of the whole 55 to have spent every week in the top prized places. Cutie Helen's Hotties remain in the promotion pack in 8th.

Lower down Hargs Hammers, Premiership - here we come and PLG is a fud all climb the right direction, whereas Goonersmoan and NotmadeinSheffield fall away.

Movers and Shakers

Some news from the managerial rollercoaster that is the Nobby & Ready Fantasy League. Howard Grace, manager of Carnarvon Kickers and keen cyclist has biked his way around to Lockton from Aon's facultative reinsurance team. Which is good news particularly for Alex Boswell because the casualty high-flier now has a fantasy team mate and Lockton will join the N&R Team Challenge with immediate effect.

When I was back last I met James Down for a cup of splosh and tried to help him on his forthcoming move to the United States with Aspen. Sounds like a great opportunity for James, who will leave at Christmas to work in Atlanta, as well as spending time in Boston.

Another manager who has already made the transition to the good old US of A is Greg Foulger. The high-flying Boys on Tour will now be managed Jurgen Klinsmann like from Miami, Florida. Greg, who has recently been doing more travelling than even me still works for RSA and I am sure he's enjoying the crazy nightlife in Miami. When I was last there I manged to lose my hotel key, my blackberry and my company credit card all in one night - it is that sort of place!

Good luck to all three of them.

My kinda town

At home for Thanksgiving. Last year we had family in town and before that I went home, but this year I'm looking forward to taking it easy for the full four days after a recent exhausting travel schedule. So eating, drinking, sleeping and watching television while the first winter snow falls outside my window.

The first ever Thanksgiving was said to have been celebrated in 1621 by the Pilgrims after their first harvest. The Pilgrims had settled in Plymouth Colony, which is now in Massachusetts on the beautiful slither of land between Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound. As wild turkeys were in plentiful supply, that is what they ate.

The day sporadically became a regular observance throughout Colonial America, but after the American Revolution, it was George Washington who declared the first official national Thanksgiving Day on November 26, 1789.

However even up and until 1940, various states observed different dates and some, particularly in the south didn't recognise it at all. It is now always on the last Thursday of November.

As for 'Turkey Day,' since 1947 the National Turkey Federation has presented the President of the United States with one live turkey and two dressed turkeys. The live turkey was pardoned and lived out the rest of its days on a peaceful farm. In more recent times two turkeys have been pardoned and in 2003 the public were invited to vote for the two turkeys' names. Last year, so I read, they were named Marshmallow and Yam, and they went on to live at Disneyland.

Schizophrenic tendencies

I was at wedding the weekend and when the European qualifier scores filtered through on Saturday and I did feel sorry for the Scots who suffered the inevitable anguish. I remember my brother and I having a beer at the end of September with a good Italian friend of mine concerned about his countries chances of qualifying and us reassuring him that Scotland were bound to cock it up.

They did but it's a real shame because I for one would have loved to have seen the tartan army at the finals evoking halycon memories of Archie Gemmill and Alan Rough. Lets hope Northern Ireland can squeeze through the back door instead.

As for England, people that know me well will know I have schizophrenic tendencies towards the national team. McClaren is a nob no doubt but against all odds Israel overcame the Russians and amazingly we now only need a point on Wednesday against the already qualified Croatia. For all but two months every four years my support of the national team is passive at best but then of course during the two big tournaments I wrap myself like others in the St. George.

Next June's festival of football would of course be wretched without us in it, although no doubt I would get over it. The answer to that renowned football fan question. Club or Country? Doesn't take much thinking about from this quarter.

So Wednesday I will of course drag a motley crew of ex-pats and American 'soccer' fans, including Davor, a Croat down to the boozer to hopefully watch us grab a place in Austria and Switzerland next year. Enger-land....

Get Inter them

Breaking News 88888 Manager of week 13
More surprises than a night out with Suzie in week 13 when Rob Munden's fine skills floated to the top securing the five quid MoW prize scoring 5 points more than Paul Long aka known as Mutley to all of his old Lloyds friends. Another low scoring week, and a with a point less than Paul was was Davor Duvancic hitting his biggest homer of the season to finally climb of the bottom of Div 1.

Other managers making a positive impact in Div 1 during week 13 were Mark Dewberry, Richard Nathan, Barry Paull, Kirsty Baillie and Mark Wenman.

In Div 2 Dave Wisdom and Steve Black, again, both scored well as did Welsh wizard Huw Thomas.

Other mentions in dispatches should be made to Paul Hargis, Greg Foulger, Michael Stout, Rob Munden, John McGowan and Alex Byatt.

No such luck for Tim Feldbruegge who low scored with 12.

Feet tied to Tree

Breaking news 8888 Division 1 - week 13 news
The battle at the top hotted up in week 13 when Ajax Treesdown joined Flighty Feet on 407 points with Tally.Wacker.co.uk nestled in behind. The next four teams continue their chase with Runningoutofroubles and Inter the pub running the fastest in week 13.

Oldham tightly (which I understand Ryan has been lately!) slipped a little and Tora Tora Torres lower down the table showed some good form in week 13 after Richard managed their best score for 11 weeks.

The relegation sides remain unaltered but there was big news at the very bottom where my rather tall Croat’s Dinamo Ilegalna Imigrant moved off the bottom spot for the first time since September. A good week all round for Croatia and bottom spot is now occupied by Herr Oakers.

No change

Breaking news 8888 Division 2 - week 13 news
It was the old one-two in the second tier of N&R FL in week 13. Boys on tour and Arsene Knows stay out front although Student uprising and Megan & Hannah’s bears climb over each other as they battle to reach them. The rest of the promotion challengers remain in the top 8 and all the way down to mid-table there was little change.

NotmadeinSheffield
further down the table dropped a few notches (thanks for the pint the other day Ian) and Hargs Hammers gain some ground. Nancy Lollygaggers was a faller and What the hell gained more ground after another cracking week.

Bottom side Nipple Antennae are now 33 points adrift.

Road to Wembley - Shame on Shaymen

Halifax Town's hopes of a run as N&R's Wembley dream team was left in tatters after they were stuffed at home by Burton Albion.

Incidents midway through the first half and early in the second against high-flying Burton Albion ended the Shayman's time in the FA Cup. Halifax were reduced to 10 men after 25 minutes when Anthony Griffith became the fifth player in eight games to be sent off after he clipped Shaun Harrad's heels as he raced towards the edge of the Halifax area.

Burton's DARYL CLARE smacked home the free kick to deliver a double whammy and when Cortez Belle delayed a clearance and gifted JOHN McGRATH a second three minutes after the break the game was over a contest. Albion went on to bag a couple more before the end, picking Town off on the break as the home side tried in vain to get back into the game.

There was nothing to suggest it would end up such a one sided game in an entertaining opening 20 minutes which saw chances at both ends.

Burton's third goal in the 63rd minute came from a Poole clearance that was flicked on by Harrad. CLARE latched onto the ball and fired home from the right side of the area. Then Clare reacted quickly to flash a shot across the face of goal and wide and hammered a free kick into the Halifax defensive wall as he went in search of a hat-trick.

But the fourth goal went to McGRATH who tapped home from close range after Legzdins had saved superbly from Clare, who shot from eight yards.

Halifax had chances for a consolation late on, but Shaw had a header from Daryl Taylor's cross deflect wide and Bushell sent a shot from another Taylor delivery from the right over the bar.

Halifax Town: Legzdins, Scott, Young, Belle (Taylor 50), Doughty (Wright 50), Heslop, Kearney, Griffith, Torpey, Stamp (Bushell 29), Shaw.
Subs (not used): Mawson, Quinn.
Sent Off: Griffith (25)
Att: 1,936

Nigel Clough's Burton Albion become our newest team and were drawn at home to Barnet in the 2nd Round. The winner has the chance to pit their wits against one of the English big shots in the 3rd Round. More on the Brewers soon.

Catch up

I am somewhat behind with the N&R FL due to holiday and then a work trip to London followed by New York and a fun-filled sojourn in Akron, Ohio.

I will quickly knock these scores out beginning with the below week 12. Have no fear any transfers are backdated.

Hope you are all well and getting ready for the season.

Take care, Nobby & Ready

Black Beauty

Breaking News 88888 Manager of week 12
What the hell indeed. Steve Black, whose first ever N&R season has been at best non-descript suddenly went from a fantasy nobody to a real somebody in week 12 when he battered in 53 points to be the clear MoW winner. A crisp royally minted 5 pound note will be exchanged for however many 100’s of dollars that turns out to be come May!

Behind Steve was Nigel Tatlock with 48 points, helping Nige to continue to climb the table. Relegation fodder a couple of weeks back he is now on the verge of the title race after an excellent few weeks. Helen Peters is also new to this fantasy malarkey but is doing a sterling job. Helen hit the 3rd best weekly score to propel herself into Div 2 promotion contention.

Megan McLeod is another manager on the path to greatness, moving herself away from the bottom towards the top, a fine week for her and also leader Greg Foulger.

Another sort off forgotten star is John Littig but the boy in Philly did well in week 12 as did Huw Thomas and Barry Plummer.

Not so good was Neil Cryer who scored week 12 lowest total with 6.

Top 3 march on

Breaking news 8888 Division 1 - week 12 news
Only 5 points separate the top three teams at the summit of the N&R Div 1 table after week 12. These three Flighty Feet, Ajax Treesdown and Tally.Wacker.co.uk have opened a little gap at the top of the table. There are 31 points between 3rd and Sleepless Knights in 4th but then the league concertinas once more with Coming from behing again, Egg & (Stevie) Bacon and Runningoutofroubles FC just split by 3 points. Another 5 teams are all within spitting distance.

The major change at the foot of the table is that Obeonekanobenil join the relegation stragglers whilst Little Red Devils move out of the bottom 8 for the first time since August.

What the fookin’ hell

Breaking news 8888 Division 2 - week 12 news
Boys on Tour stay at the top of Div 2 after week 12’s scores increasing his lead over Arsene Knows to 22 points. Megan & Hannah’s bears and Student Uprising continue in 3rd and 4th but 2Infinity & beyond and surprise package Helen’s Hotties climb into joint 5th.

Get him big Dave is back in the race, whilst there is a fall from grace for Howard’s Carnarvon Kickers.

Below the promotion races both No hopers and Californication improve their placings, whilst Goonersmoan and Premiership - here we come slip.

At the bottom What the hell climb away from the last three places after his amazing week 12, Steve’s best score of the season by a country mile. This drops Red Bull Ginger into the bottom three for the first time this season.

My kinda town

Just back from an amazing trip to Japan. A 3-week holiday crammed into 8 days. Travelling 1,300 miles from Tokyo to Kyoto to Hiroshima and back. The fish market auction in Tokyo was quite something. Up at 3.30am to get amongst the local wholesalers who auction huge tuna's to the sushi restaurants. Lunch, i.e. raw fish with a Kirin beer at 6.30am did not seem weird, and why should it?

Catching glimpses of the real-life geishas off to 'work' in Kyoto was something to be seen. Ornate and unbelievably serene white-faced young girls scurryling off down narrow hardly lit narrow streets was quite a something. Tourists snapped at them as if they were paparazzi, whereas I just stared.

In Hiroshima hundreds of young impeccibly behaved school kids bowing in front of the Children's Memorial was very sad. A similiar feeling to walking around the Jewish museum in Washington DC if any of you have ever done that.

Now I know the Jap's did much to anger the world 60 years ago but Hiroshima was a sad place, and it now tries to lead to world on peace. Interesting to note that neither the Japanese nor the Germans have ever been involved in a conflict since the end of WWII. The same can't be said of us Brits and the Americans, in fact an unamed person in my office summed up their approach to the rest of the world when they told me "Hmm, I have never heard of Hiroshima." What do they teach the kids here?

I have a feeling if you asked a Japanese person about Pearl Harbor, they would know of it, and look down at their feet with tremendous shame and sadness.

I will write more on my holiday in Japan if you are interested soon at www.chicagoaddick.blogspot.com.

Take care, Nobs

Road to Wembley - Halifax overcome Evesham

Our Evesham boys were knocked out of the 4th Qualifying Round of the FA Cup by Halifax and the Shaymen become our new team to follow.

The two sides could not be separated at St Georges Lane drawing the first game 0-0 in front of a bumper 652 fans.

The Robins again performed magnificently in the replay and pushed Halifax all the way and the only boos ringing around the ground at the end came from the disgruntled 1,025 home fans. JAMES KNOTT had given Evesham the perfect start when he capitalised on a fourth minute error to stun the Yorkshire hosts.

However, Town hit back and drew level after 14 minutes when ex Millwall man Steve Torpey crossed for NATHAN VAUGHAN to head past Jon Shaw.

Halifax then took the lead nine minutes before the break when the United keeper could only stand and watch as SIMON HESLOP's thumping drive from 35 yards flew into the top corner.

Halifax Town from the Conference National will now play at home to Nigel Clough's Burton Albion.

Making transfers

There was a recent case when both Nobby and Ready were away on holiday at the same time, not together, although in the same continent, but just away and sure enough the planet as we know it nearly fell apart.

Don't worry if you put a transfer in and no one responds, all transfers emailed to me will be backdated, so no need to panic.

Please continue to send emails to me at simon_newport@ars.aon.com with transfer requests as normal. Do not send them to anyone else. Remember the weekly deadline is 5pm on Tuesday GMT.

Also, it would be rather handy if you understood who was in your team and didn't try to sell players that you don't have or buy Ronaldo to replace Dean Whitehead, not unless you want to sell another 4 of your players and just have 7 men.

Also please don't try to sign players who don't either exist or don't play in the Premierhip. Believe me it has happened.

Thank you for you consideration. Happy halloween.

Nice one Nancy

Breaking News 88888 Manager of week 11
Marathon runner and lollygagger, Megan McLeod became the first female to win a Manager of the Week award this season. 5 whole pounds, about 2,438 dollars at this week's exchange rate, will wing it's way to Megan at season-end. Congratulations.

Only 44 points was needed to collect the weekly prize, the lowest of the season to date. Rutts came up next with 40 followed by marathon runner and Nancy boy Michael Stout, who hit 39. Mark Dewberry scored 37 and fcuk me even Davor scored 36, the same as Barwick & Higgs.
Danny Rose and Tatters managed 35, two more than Greg Foulger and Helen Peters. Shouts to for Rob Munden and Martin Lee's mob, who turned in another fine performance.

Now for the embarrassing bit. A minus score is quite hard to get in fantasy football. I mean you start with 11 players and there are many ways in which players can score. There are only a few ways for players to get negative marks but an odd sending off or conceding a hatful of goals is normally equalled out by one of the other 10 players in your line up doing well over a scoring week.

In week 11 Nobby managed to score -1 point, not actually a record but a bloody good effort nonetheless. There is a 25 quid prize for the lowest weekly score, it's not big, it's not clever, although it might mean a new house on the current exchange rate and drop in the housing market but it is embarrassing and we need to move on....

Sweet for Feet

Breaking news 8888 Division 1 - week 11 news
A new leader in Division 1 of probably the best Insurance Fantasy League in the world. One of the pre-season favourites Flighty Feet under the control of Catherine and Karen take the lead after 11 weeks play. They have been in the top 7 since the start of the season and finally usurp fellow AIG'er Ajax Treesdown.

Tally.Wacker.co.uk drop to 3rd with Egg & (Stevie) Bacon in 4th but upto 5th are Dewbs' Sleepless Knights with a wonderful week 11 score. OldhamTightly slip out of the title race and Inter thepub, NY Eagles and Glasgow kiss each improve their positions.

The bottom 8 remain the same.

Boys on top

Breaking news 8888 Division 2 - week 11 news
Greg Foulger topped off a fine first quarter of the season by grabbing top spot for his Boys on tour, overtaking previous incumbent of every week bar one Megan & Hannah's bears. Alex's girls actually slipped to 3rd after a duff week, although not as duff as some, of 10 points, which was a season low for the Rangers fan.

In 2nd is Arsene Knows, up from 3rd while the next four managers have a similiar look to it, including Howard Grace, the manager of Carnavon Kickers who is currently tending to his bicycle in his garden after resigning from Aon. H will be taking up residence at Lockton.... what's that Alex? Ignore him H, I am sure it is a good move for Aon, er sorry you.

Get him Big Dave are the week's losers as they drop out of the promotion race. The No-hopers are having a reet old party after climbing the table to 11th - kleenex for Mr Stout to rub that blood away from bleeding nose please.

Goonersmoan crack the whip and climb 6 places. Hargs Hammers go the other way as do Nobs Jockeys who have now officially undone all the previous good work falling 15 places in 3 weeks.

That just leaves Megan's Nancy Lollygaggers, who after their MoW performance skate clear of the bottom feeders, with Timmy's Nipple Antennae the hungriest of them all.

Road to Wembley - Easy for Evesham

The Robins from the Cotswold didn't let us down on Saturday when Evesham thrashed Halesown Town from a level higher 3-0.

Paul West's men outplayed Halesowen in all departments and thoroughly deserved their place in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round draw.

Chances were at a premium in the first half when United more than matched their more established opponents but it took MARK OWEN just two minutes of the second half to break the deadlock with controlled curled finish to maintain his record of scoring in every round.

Owen turned provider ten minutes later when it was left to JAMES KNOTT to provide a sweet finish.

Nathan Vaughan was forced into the save of the match to keep out Aaron Farrell's 71st minute header before united substitute DANNY SCHEPPEL netted with the last kick of the game to complete a fabulous afternoon for the Robins.

iT rounded off a quite splendid afternoon and guaranteed the hosts a £5,000 windfall in front a crowd of 332 at St George's Lane.

In the 4th Qualifying Round, Evesham were drawn at home to Halifax Town from the Conference National, 3 levels higher than the Robins. The game will take place at St George's Lane on October 27th.

Letters page

Received a couple of good emails recently:

From Richard 'Razor' Nathan
"Dear Nobby, love your work by the way. Hope u're doing well. Went to the Northern BIIBA dinner last Friday, and was chatting with Neil Razor Ruddock in the bar after his highly entertaining after dinner speech. I mentioned that we shared nicknames as he drank his way thru another gallon of Magners. Later when I was on the way to my room, I saw in him the hotel foyer and called over 'G'night Razor', to which he responded, 'G'night Razor' - seemed to make losing part of my weekend worthwhile.
Richard"

The Northern BIIBA dinner, shit you must have done something really bad to have to go to that.
From Ian Kennett in Paris
"Dear Nobby, love your work. Just woken up, I am in Paris and was at the game last night (Sat v France) and as a fully fledged egg chaser it was one of the best nights of my life:
Ferry crossing £40
Train ticket £60
Match ticket £300
The look on the French faces at the final whistle PRICELESS

Got 2 tickets for the final this morning from a sad Frenchie :), the current Mrs Kennett will be distinctly unamused! Not sure the liver and wallet will withstand another week (the final will be my 5th game!)

CRY GOD FOR JONNY ENGLAND AND SAINT GEORGE

Ian"
I asked Ian if he was taking his missus to the final, surprisingly he chose his 20 stone (280lb) mate over the current Mrs K.

Billy Big Tally

Breaking News 88888 Manager of week 8
Paul Kelleher bettered his N&R FL best weekly score in week 9 by 4 and collected his 2nd MoW award. Close on his tail was Greg Foulger and Big Plumms, who each knocked in 63 pts. Barwick & Higgs equalled PK's previous best of 61 and Ian Kennett, who has been totally anonymous so far this season woke from his slumber and shot a superb 60 pts.

Michael Stout continued his fine form with 56, the same week 9 score as Mark Simmons and Rob Munden. John McGowan hit a season high of 54 and four managers each got half-centuries. They were Kirstie, Tatters and that little minx Helen Peters plus Chris Waterman, who scored 50 for the 2nd consecutive week, which means a climb of 9 places in 2 weeks for Chris.

Other notable weeks were had by Dewbs and Sweaty, each scoring 49. Emma Wylie and Neil Cryer both scored their best season scores as did Steve Black and Barry Paull.

The lowest week 9 scorer was, no not Davor surprisingly, but Francey. What's that? Oh, you're not surprised!

Streaking bacon

Breaking news 8888 Division 1 - week 9 news
New challengers to Ajax after week 9. PK's Tally.Wacker.co.uk and Catherine and Karen's Flighty Feet are joint 2nd leapfrogging Ben's Egg & (Stevie) Bacon. Runningoutofroubles FC also gain a place after a season-high score. Coming from behing make the top 7 for the first time this season at the expense of Sleepless Knights.

Inter Thepub surge up the table after a fine week and Glasgow Kiss nuzzle up a few places too. Obafemi & the Femidoms keep going backwards like Razor's Tora Tora Torres. NY Eagles claim a season best which drives them back up the table.

At the bottom Nige's In Tatters and Little Red Devils at last get out of relegation trouble, but that throw's Pure Irish and Keep the faith deep into the doo-doo, Francey actually being in 7th just a month ago.

Gregory's Peck

Breaking news 8888 Division 2 - week 9 news
Newby's Boys on Tour slip into 2nd place in the slipstream of Megan and Hannah's Bears following an excellent week 9. Arsene knows drop a place and lower down the promotion hopefuls Carnarvon Kickers gain a further spot to 5th whilst fellow sheep shagger Huw Thomas' Get him big Dave climb into contention and from nowhere 2Infinity & beyond clamber in there as well after a season high 63.

Notmadeinsheffield and Emirates FC drop back but not as far as lightweights Nobs Jockeys, Last train to Seaford and Hargs' Hammers.

Californication move up two and again No-hopers have a big week, up 4 more places. Congratulations to both Michael and Megan on running and finishing the Chicago Marathon, unlike 20,000 others that entered it last Sunday. In fact Megan must have taken her eye of the ball as Nancy Lollygaggers fell back to near the bottom as did Singleton's Muchas Empanadas.

The Wise Prankers stay in penultimate place and Nipple Antennae are still rooted to the bottom but it should be noted that they have a higher score than Davor's Dinamo Ilegalna Imigrant in Div 1.

Road to Wembley - Welcome to Evesham Utd

Our latest N&R boys Evesham United play at home to Halesowen tomorrow in the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. Here is the skinny on the Robins from the Cotswolds:

League: Southern League Division One Midlands
Colours: Red and white stripes
Ground: They share with Worcester City, capacity 4,749
Founded: In 1945 by returning servicemen from World War II
Famous ex-players: Well not very famous but Andy Preece and ex-Spurs player Gary Stevens.
Ex-manager: They were managed by ex-Coventry player David Busst, who famously got so badly injured in a game versus Man Utd in 1986 that Peter Schmeichel vomited on the pitch upon seeing the injury and had to have counselling afterwards, along with a number of other players. Busst's never played again and his testimonial played against United was a sell out.
Current manager: Paul West

If Evesham win they will equal their best ever place in the FA Cup.

My kinda town

Irony. Americans just don't get it. The other day, I phoned someone and they said "Oh, I was just about to call you, how ironic?" Well actually no, coincidence perhaps, irony most definitely not.

How I have tried to make them realise what is irony and what is not. They don't get it.

For example Arnold Schwarzenegger actively campaigns against violence in film and video games. Now that's fucking ironic, has he never seen The Terminator starring himself?

Irony or ironical as someone who will remain nameless but he works in my team and used to be a N&R FL manager, says is lost on dear old Americans and that is predominately the reason why British comedians or sit-coms don't make it here. Even The Office has been remade for American television. It's still good but it is nowhere near as funny.

Ricky Gervais actually once walked up on to stage to collect his second Golden Globe of the evening and announced that they would make "excellent bookends." The audience gasped and he got slated in the press for being disrespectful. It was a joke, watch my lips, J O K E.

Some American comedy shows do use a form of irony and sarcasim, which works very well. Friends is the obvious one, but you always get a sense of knowing what is coming because the jokes and situations are often so set up. The best British comedies are not like that, often having to watch a Only Fools and Horses or a Fawlty Towers over and over again to get the bits that you missed the first time. I can watch an Absolutely Fabulous or a Porridge or a Blackadder episode over and over again, and will never get bored.

Unfortunately I cannot say the same for Frasier, Two and a Half Men or Everybody Loves Raymond because although funny first time around, they don't make me laugh second time.

As someone once said, Britain and America are separated by the Irony Curtain.

Inside track on Neil Warnock aka Colin Wanker

From today's Guardian Fiver
"Oh, it would be amusing, but probably not as funny as the Tango-tinged
complexion-and-blond-bob combo sported by Crystal Palace chairman
Simon Jordan when he introduced Neil Warnock as Crystal Palace's
216th manager in seven years this morning. "I am in a situation where
I've got the man I want," declared Jordan, who looks more and more
like his married-to-Peter Andre namesake with each passing week.
"Neil has been on my radar a long time - even before Iain Dowie came
on board - because he represents everything I want in a football
manager. He's a winner and has a desire to be successful."

Warnock's a winner all right, having accumulated six promotions, three
manager of the month awards and the gong for Hartlepool player of the
year in 1972. Having revealed that he'd had "the best part of five or
six" other job offers, Warnock revealed that he'd taken the Palace
job because Jordan is a long-time friend and because "all the
conditions here makes this the one challenge that I couldn't say no
to"."

Warnock's Record: 6 Promotions in 20 years, one in the last 10, 4 via play offs, only one but the most recent from the division that Palace play in. Took him from December 1999 to May 2006 to get Sheffied up. Will Mr Jordan be happy to wait that long?

Promotions:
1986–87: Conference winners (promotion to Division 4) - Scarborough
1989–90: Division 3 Playoff winners (promotion to Division 2) - Notts County
1990–91: Division 2 Playoff winners (promotion to Division 1) - Notts County
1994–95: Division 2 Playoff winners (promotion to Division 1) - Huddersfield Town
1995–96: Division 3 Playoff winners (promotion to Division 2) - Plymouth Argyle
2005–06: Championship Runners-up (promotion to Premier League) - Sheffield United

Royal party

RSA are the somewhat surprise first leaders of the N&R Team Challenge. Greg has made a positive impact on the fortunes of RSA, much better than that skinny bloke, who used to play. AIG's strong team are in 2nd with Aaron leading the way, if only they could persuade Francey to get rid of the spreadsheet..

The current champions Layton Blackham sit nicely in third with Ryan again the dominant player, in 4th are the deadly BMS boys with 5th the Lloyds combo of Cryer and Nathan.

The 9-strong team of Aon Re are next up, having so many players gives them a great chance of winnng this title but equally they cannot afford stragglers and Glenn is currently slowing their challenge down. Next up are the glorious visa Ex-Pat boys with Nobby out in front. Kirstie leads the Willis push for glory and behind them are Chicago's Allianz offering of Stout and Black.

Finally the early strugglers are Aspen and Aon's US team, who bring up the rear.

Rant over

I don't get to watch much decent telly here. You can get bored of Cops killing kids, earthquakes, men having 3 wifes and 25 children, political shenanigans and American Football heroes arranging dog fighting in their back garden - and that's just the news. You Tube is the new must-see television. On there I can see all kinds of stuff, and I find myself watching it over and over again, just like Dida's very embarrassing moment last week at Parkhead.

Now of course the Sweaty should never of got on the pitch and in my experience would have endeared himself better to cops, fans and players alike, if he just ran around ball-nake. However he will regret stroking Milan's keeper Dida's cheek at the same time as a trained sniper took a pot-shot at the Brazilian from a nearby tenament building because the bloke, 27-year-old Robert McHendry, has now got himself banned for life from footie and a place in You Tube annals of history.

McHendry of course was embarrassed by his actions, but how does Dida feel? What an absolute prized plonker eh? The Brazilian recovered from gun shot wounds, a fractured cheekbone and a bruised ego in time to play for Milan on Sunday, and it should be noted made it through the whole game without breaking a nail, but after what he did last week FIFA should throw the book at him. Talk about taking play-acting to a new level. Throw the book at him, and let's see if that hurts more than a stroke across the face.

Top Bear

Breaking News 88888 Manager of week 8
The 2nd best score of the season was larrupped by Boswell in week 8 as he continues to run riot in N&R Div 2. Dom Barrett was next up but a good 6 behind, followed by Plummer and our Soozie.

Greg Foulger and most surprisingly Michael Stout then both scored 51, each a season best. Huw Thomas and Chris Waterman both deserve plaudits for a half century too.

Looking down the list, notable scores were had by Kelleher, his 3rd decent on the spin, a season best from Shay Reddy and Hilary Ryan. Barden hit his lowest for 6 weeks as he showed a kink in the armour and Paul Long finally got his act together after making more changes than Rafa Benitez.

The Sweatmeister had a roaring week 8 with 45 and Chicken eater Lee Day had a season best. Wizzo and Steve Black did likewise, but the worst week 8 score was saved for Martin Lee, but its alright because Coxon has given him the vote of confidence, oh....

Bear not behind

Breaking news 8888 Division 2 - week 8 news
For 7 out of 8 weeks Boswell's Megan & Hannah's Bears have been out in front and have surely made an exceptional start to the Div 2 season. Arsene Knows slip to 15 points in Alex's shadow, whilst Student Uprising and Boys on Tour remain in 3rd and 4th.

Barretts the Bollocks moves up 2 as Emirates stay put. NotmadeinSheffield continue their good form, but what exactly is not made in Sheffield? Just about everything except Bryan Robson's bar bill I would have thought!

Those Welsh sheep lovers Carnavon Kickers move in to 8th at the expense of Nobs Jockeys, who are position normal, after a cack week 8. Premiership - here we come claim a place to 9th, Get him Big Dave climb 4 places, Hargs Hammers gather pace and the biggest mover was forgotton man Plumms' 2 Infinity & Beyond. Nice to see you back big boy.

Helen's Hotties got a temperature in week 8 and fell a few, and my joint favourite Scottish bird Emma is falling like Dida as Wylie Coyotes drop to 18th. A word for Stouty's No Hopers, who for the first time, probably ever, have overtaken his better half Megan's Nancy Lollygaggers.

And finally new in the penultimate position is Martin Lee's The Wise Prankers, who is leading the Endurance boys as successfully as Peter Taylor.

Sausages

Breaking news 8888 Division 1 - week 8 news
Not much happening in N&R FL Div 1 after week 8. Treesdown still lead, the next four remain the same and Sleepless Knights and Runningoutofroubles FC swapped seats when the music stopped. Soozies Sausages was the hot dog in week 8 climbing 6 places to 11th with the division's best score. Francey's Keep the faith meanwhile proofed that he is a pork banger dropping 7 places to the edge of relegation-dom. Obafemi & the Femidoms also slipped up, probably on a sausage, and fell to 10th.

In the relegation pie In Tatters and Lamb to the Sausage all gained some ground (meat). Further into the mince go Rooney & Ronaldo's Revenge and Lovejoy's Luvvies.

Rant over

I must of missed this, apparently Jose Mourinho has left Chelsea after 3 years. Why is that news? Does anyone care? Ok, about 16,000 Chelsea fans with fading tatoo's might but the other 20,000 will go and support someone else, go back to croquet or just work overtime in their restaurant on a Saturday afternoon instead. No one cares, sure I will miss his media interviews because he was good value, he was good for Chelsea, but it was always going to come to an end wasn't it? Personally I thought it was pretty bang out of order Chelsea fans giving Les Reed, sorry Avram Grant a tough time on Saturday, I mean it's hardly his fault that he looks like the Toad from Toad Hall is it?

Jose's gone, he was there 5 minutes and he's moved on. No ones mourning because it's a rare victory for true football lovers. It's a moment to rejoice because of everything that Chelsea represent, and everything that has followed implies. Despite having taken Chelsea to 2nd and a semi-final in the Champions League, the much-loved Claudio Ranieri was cast aside to make way for the Special One, a former Champions League winner who would surely take Chelsea not only to Premiership glory (as if Roman cared about that), but to European glory too.

Abramovich was used to getting what he wanted; Mourinho was his executor, and he didn't expect to be disappointed. As it transpired, Mourinho's final game in charge summed up the truth about Chelsea.....a medium-sized club pumped full of egos, shorn of fans and unable to cast aside the very best that Norway had to offer. (There were nearly as many at The Valley that night against the very best that Norwich had to offer).

Chelsea were the first example of real foreign money being pumped into the game (and from one of Europe's richest men no less), but more worringly for genuine fans, the first concerted attempt to create a football 'brand', that unlike say Liverpool or Man Utd, was not rooted in a century of trophies and glory nights. Winning was the only goal, style was irrelevant.

As an away fan, when you walk into Anfield for example, the sense of tradition and passion is overwhelming. The fact that the stadium lies bang in the middle of one of the most deprived inner cities in the country merely adds to the aura of the place. Compare this to Stamford Bridge, as you stroll down the well-to-do Kings Road, past the half-empty hotel complex and into the characterless stadium that, at least when it hosted a dog track, had the semblance of some soul.

Anfield brings memories of Hansen, Highway, Keegan and Daglish; Stamford Bridge, Gordon Durie.

Chelsea's success did break up the dominance of the top 3 but did anyone other than rich Mayfair-ites, waiters, corporate suits and old skinheads think that it was done in the 'right' fashion? From Peter Kenyon's unfathomably large ego to their flamboyant transfer policy that, as is now obvious, focused on the size of the fee, not the size of the heart. Even Frank Lampard, apparently deep down a decent and philanthropic type, has been turned into an utterly charmless figure, booed even by fans of England.

John Terry, a Barking boy from a football family, now thinks he is Gordon Gecko, demanding a contract whereby he will always be the highest paid player even until he is 36 years old and will then be offered the managers job on a silver platter. Well, give him the bloody job and see if he can get them out of League One.

Ashley Cole, once the finest full back in football. Andriy Shevchenko, the laziest piece of crap to ever stain the Premier League - how can Chelsea fans be proud of him? HernĂ¡n Crespo, out on loan for the past 3 years, just so know one else can have him. It makes me wretch.

And that's what Roman Abramovich's Chelsea have brought to English football. For most of the 1980s and 1990s, Chelsea were a yo-yo club, their fans bowing to QPR in bragging rights, and playing their football in one of the most unpleasant and fearsome 'stadiums' in the land. As recently as the late 1980s, they played a midweek Division One fixture in front of less than 10,000 fans.

They are not a big club, but by chance they happen to be situated amongst the most expensive real estate in the world. Cue a ticketing policy that was firmly focused upon attracting those that can pay, rather than those that cared. The Champions League game against Rosenborg on the eve of Mourinho's departure was the inevitable result. This is a pivotal moment for Chelsea. Abramovich has made it clear that he will not continue to bankroll the club to the same degree, and there is a very large risk that one day he will wake up and be bored and take his filty roubles somewhere else.

With no obvious manager waiting in the wings and with boos ringing around Stamford Bridge Saturday for Roman's mate Avram Grant plus the press having a field day, it would be wildly optimistic to hope that Abramovich would walk away and leave the club destitute, but then again who could he sell it to who would take on the debt he is owed? Either way, let's just assume he's lost at least a sliver of hope that he can fulfil his footballing dreams in this fashion. In the meantime, let's revel in a rare moment of schadenfreude because tonight, football is the winner.

Road to Wembley - Veggie burgers

Quorn did not have enough meat on Saturday when they were dumped out of the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round by Evesham United at home in front of 109 vegetarians.

United took an early lead when a huge punt upfield led to Take That's MARK OWEN vollwying a terrific first minute goal giving United the lead. The visitors had enough chances to have wrapped up the tie before the break with Owen going closest with a shot that was turned on to the crossbar.

Evesham's goal had a couple of lucky escapes and their goalkeeper was also forced to save splendidly from Robert Betts before JAMES KNOTT capped an encouraging display with a fine solo goal five minutes before half-time to put Evesham in a 2-0 lead.

The second half turned into a scrappy affair with neither goalkeeper tested until a cross from the right was volleyed past Vaughan by Quorn's JAMIE CLARKE with 21 minutes remaining. The goal sparked the Leicestershire side into life and an equaliser looked on the cards as Evesham sat back and it would have arrived had goalkeeper Vaughan not performed heroics on the goalline six minutes from time to keep out Clarke's point-blank. Still Quorn pushed for an equaliser.

However the tie was wrapped up as lively substitute Daniel Lennon was foiled by the Quorn keeper who was left helpless by DANNY SCHEPPEL's follow-up that looped into the net.

The afternoon got worse for the Quorn when Nigel Julien was red-carded for a late tackle on Simon Fitter who came within inches of making it 4-1 as did Lennon and Scheppel in the final minute.

So we don't give a sausage to Quorn anymore as Evesham Utd take the N&R FL's Road to Wembley's reigns. The Worcestershire club play in Southern League Midlands Division and will be our 4th team this season after Cadbury Athletic, Alvechurch and Quorn.

The draw for the 3rd Qualifying Round saw Halesowen being pulled out of the bag and they will travel to Evesham on Saturday, October 13. The game will kick off early (in case you want to go) to avoid a clash with England's Euro 2008 qualifier with Estonia.

The wind blows for PK

Breaking News 88888 Manager of week 7
Paul Kelleher who is bringing his bird to Chicago next April on honeymoon (oops, was that a secret PK? Sorry), won week 7's MoW with the season's best 7 day total so far, 61 points. There were a couple of surprises next up with Mono and Huw Thomas running in 56. Behind them were the irresistible Nobby, hitting his season's best score. Luvvly jubbly.

Other good scoring was done by Rutts and Div 1 leader Aaron Barden. Ryan Saveall, Johnny Mc, Sooz, Ben Graves, Rob Beere and Howie Grace all get merit marks.

There will be detentions for Wenners, Timmy F, Ready, Waterman and the Ginger Rabbit, who will be cooked with some braised carrots and garlic mash.

The best weekly score

7 week's gone and the week's best score has been achieved by Pk, but only a paltry 61 points. As someone remarked the other day, the fantasy play this season has been dreadful. The points totals are low and even Boswell won a MoW award with 40 odd points. Anyway these are the best weekly scores so far, remember there is a £25 award for the winner at the end of the season.

1. Paul Kelleher, week 7, 61 points
2= Huw Thomas, week 7, 56 points
2= Ian Monohan, week 7, 56 points
4= Mark Wenman, week 2, 54 points
4= Simon Newport, week 7, 54 points
6. Brian Rutter, week 7, 52 points
7. Aaron Barden, week 7, 51 points
8. Aaron Barden, week 3, 50 points
9. Aaron Barden, week 4, 50 points
10. Richard Nathan, week 2, 49 points

Breaking news 8888 Division 1 - week 7 news
A further stretch in the lead from Ajax Treesdown in week 7, yawn. Come on the rest of you lot, lets be having you....

The top 5 remain identical, this is truly like watching the Premier League isn't it? Oh hang on, Tally.Wacker.co.uk are doing the Man City thing and move from 15th to 5th after a MoW score.

Obafemi & the Femidoms, Keep the faith and Hannoi Utd all drop out of the prize zone but Space Badgers and Coming from behing all improve their chances. Looking further down....

sorry I stopped at chest level, is Suzie's sausages, who move out of the relegation pack and into 16th. Her place is taken by In Tatters.

Double top

Breaking news 8888 Division 2 - week 7 news
Wow look at that, two teams sharing top spot, how exciting! Arsene Knows and Megan & Hannah's both have 220 points, 8 more than Student Uprising, who remain in 3rd.

Boys on Tour continue in 4th but hang on its little ol' Nobs Jockeys in joint 5th place alongside Emirates FC. Barretts the Bollocks drop to 7th and newby NotmadeinSheffield stroll into the final promotion place after 7 weeks of games.

Below the top 8 its as tight as a gnats chuff and Californication found this out when after a poor week they fell 9 places down the league. Goonersmoan going most of the way in the other direction.

Another manager who went down last week (according to reports) was Emma Wylie, whose Coyotes dropped 11 places to 15th!

Nipple Antennae remain looking for a signal at the bottom of Div 2.

Offended

I have heard on the grapevine that some of you lot have had my email blocked with the message: INBOUND INTERNET E-MAIL BLOCKED - Contains Excessive Profanity or Offensive Content.

What the fucking hell are they talking about. "Excessive Profanity?" jeez, its like taking your kid to a football match, or a baseball game and getting upset when people swear. Don't take the kid then, wrap him in cotton wall and give him or her an Enid Blyton book because that is the real world.

Anyway, I have been reprimanded and I will try very hard not to mention the words Crystal and Palace on Nobby & Ready's Fantasy Football League blog again.
