6 weeks after the mighty reds were promoted up at Carlisle, one of our season-long rivals will join us this afternoon.
We put a dent in both Huddersfield and United’s promotion push during the course of the past season but both would be deserving of a leg up to the next tier this afternoon after spending the whole season alongside Sheffield Wednesday chasing us around the promotion track.
I can see cases for both teams. Huddersfield, after I believe going the whole season unbeaten, are back in the final, a goal considered to be not good enough for Lee Clark, who was heartlessly dispensed with. The Terriers were there last year too but were embarrassed by Peterborough.
Town are in their 8th season in the 3rd tier and it was at the turn of the century when they last competed in the countries 2nd.
The Blades meanwhile are about to end their first 3rd tier season since the late 80′s and if under Danny Wilson they can bounce back at the first attempt it would have been a very credible job done.
Yet, since the imprisonment of Ched Evans goals have been very hard to come by and United choked in the final furlong allowing fierce city rivals Wednesday to pip them for the place of long-way runners up.
United had to learn quick to win ugly and defend well, but in a one-off game goals are obviously required and in Jordan Rhodes, Huddersfield have a real match winner and I think it will be they who will take the honours and the 3rd promotion spot at Wembley later.
