What a turn up!

Manager of the Week - week 32
Bugger me. Tony Murray only just won himself 5 English pounds by hammering an impressive 59 MoW winning points. Well done my son.

More surprising was seeing Mark's CHAMP19NS coming 2nd with 47, the same as Giles and Kilpo. Bloody hell what a week that was even the Feldbruegge and Malloy boys rolled in a 44!

Lowest score was from Danny Rose.... again.

5 points between Graham and Rosie

N&R Division 2 - week 32
Ooh it's a bit close oop top. Dalton Worblers are just 5 ahea dof Pimp my side with Dynamo Chicken Kiev and 2Infinity & beyond level in 3rd.

Alchees Lubes climbed a place and lowere down King of Leon Osman were a significant climber.

Arsene still knows have sadly not picked up the form of his hero and remain in the Penultimate Place with Stocky bottom.

Lee and Ken move in

N&R Division 1 - week 32
Boys on tour are 48 clear and the only change in the top 5 was Tanus and Magnificent Eleven swapping places.

Gooner win league leap Financial Bale Out and Bagpuss is 8th.

ThE DrEaM FacTorY were a big climber as was Super Super Sav, Super Savlyuchenko. The bottom 12 remain the same.

Former England coach Terry Venables has made a low-key return to management by joining Wembley FC, who are on the ninth tier of English football.

The 69-year-old's last management role was as assistant to England manager Steve McClaren in 2007.

"If they are willing to learn, I am willing to teach," said Venables.

Week 32 overview

In midweek Blackburn beat Sunderland 2-0, Man City's late burst meant they beat Chelsea 2-1, Spurs and Stoke drew 1-1, Arsenal won at Everton and QPR came from 0-2 to beat Liverpool.

Saturday Chelsea and Spurs was goal less, Arsenal beat Villa 3-0, Bolton, in an emotional encounter, beat Blackburn 2-1, Wigan won at Anfield, Norwich beat a struggling Wolves, Everton won at the Liberty and Stoke held Man City 1-1.

Monday Man U scraped home against Fulham at the OT 1-0.

"Don't worry. I can do it, me and my weegie board are available." Glenn Hoddle puts his name in the frame for the England job as the FA dilly-dally.

Threesome

Manager of the Week - week 31
A three way tie for MoW, so about 46p each then!!

Henry Williams, Brett Davey and Ben Guarino all scored 67 points in week 31. Barry Plummer was next with 62.

Good scores from Ready (61), Steve Black (61), Francey (59), Ken (59) and Soozie (59).

The week's lowest belonged to Sarah and Scott with a hardly shabby 23.

Boys on the way?

N&R Division 1 - week 31
Boys on tour are beginning to run away with the N&R FL League title. Over 50 points clear now from the pack. This is the top 8:

1. Boys on tour 1,238
2. Woody's Round up 1,182
3. Guinness & eggs 1,178
4. Magnificent Eleven 1,170
5. Tanus Terriers 1,161
6. Financial Bale Out 1, 154
7. Gooner win league 1,148
8. Bagpuss 1,130

56 points separate top and 2nd but just 52 separate 2nd and 8th, in fact.

At the bottom, many look gonners but some are still fighting including Travelodge Kettles,
Two points, two flats and a packet of gravel, Nobby Junior, We are all Keith Lemon, Socceroos and Non Calculated Risk.

Brox Banditos, A Whitened Smut and Bingo lead the escape committee.

Three's company

N&R Division 2 - week 31
Close at the top of Div 2. This is the top 3 with 10 weeks left.

1. Dalton's Worblers 1,187
2. Pimp my side 1,181
3. Dynamo Chicken Kiev 1,172

So 15 points between the top 3. 2Infininty & beyond are 4th and one would have to assume that they are practically promoted.

Pure Irish are 5th, top for the first 18 weeks of course. Gooner go up 6th, Alchees Lubes 7th and newly married Glasgow kiss 9th.

Barceloner, No Hopers, Full Metal Jacket and Brighton Blues occupy the other promotion places but I would say down to around 22nd and Dan's Dribblers still have a chance to put a run together and have a crack at the top 12.

Jocky Wilson RIP

I hope our American readers forgive us for honouring one of Britain's greatest ever sportsman but it was very sad on the weekend to hear of Scottish darts player Jocky Wilson pass away at the age of 62.

"Stocky Jocky on the oche" was a legend. All of his teeth had fallen out by the time he was 28 apparently as a result of never cleaning them combined with his love of sweets and coke with his vodka (my American friends will love that little bit of info) and during a match he would easily smoke through a packet of cigarettes.

Jocky, however, came from another time, before anyone had thought of marketing the sport. He would have seven or eight vodkas before a match to settle his nerves and then move on to the pints. Once, he fell off the stage when an opponent offered him a handshake at the end of a contest.

Wilson's great battles with the Englishman Eric Bristow were watched by millions on television, but broadcasters soon found that negative publicity attracted by the hard-drinking, chain-smoking participants of this noble sport was too much for them to bear. "If darts comes off TV for good," Wilson said, "I'm off to Japan to take up sumo wrestling."Darts did not come off television, but drinking and smoking on stage were banned, and instead of a new life in Japan, Wilson retreated to his one-bedroom council flat in Kirkcaldy, where he lived out the rest of his life as a virtual recluse before the lung disease which was clearly a result of his punishingly unhealthy lifestyle finally claimed him.

Very sad. Jocky was from a time when the sporting world was a different, if more colourful place.

A bit of a surprise this one, only because I thought Keith and I would be best men or bridesmaids or something but Kirsty Baillie got married the other weekend to a very lucky young man called Jonny Clarke.

Charm Merchant

Manager of the Week - week 30
Steve Merchant picked up the weekly fiver for the MoW award. 61 for Steve and his 2nd weekly win.

It was nice to see John Hardiman have a good week. It has been a stop start season for the Kiwi but he hit 56 in week 30, Michael Stout was next up with 54, Huw 51, Andrew Wheeler and Geoff scored 48.

Steve Black continued his annual late run with 47, Kirstie nee Baillie scored 46 as did Scott Morgan and Chris Wright and Mutley both finished with a 45.

The week's worse effort was by Oakers, who scraped a 15.

Boys on tour still top but Woody's Round Up are the latest team to lead the chase. Ricky is 55 points behind though with Tanus Terriers 3rd.

Glasgow Rangers home shirt 1987-90.

The club might want to think about selling this on Ebay. It might raise a few Scottish pounds! Made by Umbro, and worn by Ally McCoist, Richard Gough, John Spencer, Terry Butcher and Trevor Francis when Graeme Souness led the side to back to back league titles. Those were the days aye lads?

Week 30 overview

The Geordies got a last minute goal against the Black Cats after Sunderland ended the match with 9 men. Fulham put 5 past Terry Connor's Wolves and Man U perhaps undeservedly beat Spurs 3-1 at WHL.

Equally Arsenal were a little fortunate to beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield. RvP was on the scoresheet of course. It ended 1-1 between Blackburn and Villa, City beat Lancashire rivals Bolton 2-0, Stoke beat Norwich 1-0 and the Baggies was to be the last port of call for AVB as Chelsea lost to West Brom 1-0.

Finally Swansea won at Wigan 2-0 to continue their fantastic first season.

N&R Weekly Bet

Fabrice Muamba

One of those moments yesterday when nothing else seemed important. Like every football fan the news of Fabrice Muamba collapsing during the Tottenham v Bolton FA Cup game stopped me in my steps.

There has been an outpouring of heartfelt wishes from the football community and beyond and it also reminded us how fragile life can be.

Fabrice Muamba survived thanks to the incredible dedication and skill of the medical teams on the pitch at White Hart Lane but remains in a very critical condition in intensive care at The London Chest Hospital. In his short life Muamba has faced a lot of adversity but he is a proven winner and I really hope he can win again.

Chelsea are back, but will Robert Di Matteo even be in consideration for the job?

Black football managers

The number of black professional football managers in England, or should I say Britain has doubled recently to four. The reason I mention this is I was thinking how well Keith Curle has done at County since he took over (5 wins and 1 draw). This is not Curle's first job, that was at Mansfield where he was sacked after being accused of bullying a youth player. The case was unceremoniously kicked out and Curle was awarded damages and the Judge called Mansfield's disciplinary process as a "sham".

Things are not going so swimmingly for Terry Connor, who was about the only bloke who didn't turn down the Wolves job after Mick McCarthy was shown the door.

Incredibly after almost 20 years of Premier League football re-writing the beautiful game's history books Terry Connor becomes just the 5th black man to manage in it. I hope Connor can last until the end of the season but he hasn't been helped by his board's indecisiveness and I suspect like his colleague Chris Hughton no doubt at some point he will be turned over for some media darling.

Nobody can argue that the lack of black managers in our game is not a serious problem. The game of football is on the whole an incredibly diverse sector in Britain and it would be foolish to argue that all boardrooms are inherently racist in their selection of managers, but in the context that there are hundreds of black players in the football league currently and hundreds before that and only four current managers it is a topic that deserves to be continually debated.

Managers don't become managers by luck. Some players become obvious candidates during their playing days, others are promoted by the media and many are career managers or coaches and take it upon themselves to get their badges and are happy to start on the first rung of the ladder.

Des Walker, Les Ferdinand, Brian Stein, Paul Elliot, Des Walker and Viv Anderson all fit into one or more of the above criteria. Others such as Andy Preece, Leroy Rosenoir, Paul Davis, Iffy Onuora, Eddie Newton (just given the interim assistant's job at Chelsea) and Noel Blake are each fully qualified coaches at the highest possible level yet have rarely been given the chance to take a top job and instead work hard at the less glamorous end of the food chain.

Future managers are sometimes easy to spot. I give you of the top of my head Brad Freidel, Scott Parker, Jamie Carragher and Kevin Davies, but I could also easily add Jason Roberts, David James, Clarke Carlisle and Darren Moore.

Many ex-black players have turned to the media for their second careers, which is not unusual. Being able to string more than a sentence together seems to get you a spot on Soccer Saturday at least but ex-players such as Robbie Earle, Garth Crooks, Luther Blissett and Stan Collymore could easily have taken their passion for the game, knowledge and experience into a dressing room but even couldn't or wouldn't.

I don't know if the Rooney Rule is viable in English football or not. Most definitely it has raised the profile of black sportsmen at the higher echelon of the game in the NFL, yet let's not kid ourselves that everything is now all fluffy and equal. There are only five head coaches in the NFL and 32 teams in a game where 70% of the players are black.

The age old problem with our ball game is that when a job comes up, the same old mostly middle aged men get rolled out by the media and bookies alike. The same media who welcome ex-pro black footballers into their industry then do them a disservice by championing the same old failed managers.

If I look at the list of favourites for the permanent Wolves job (poor old Connor, he hasn't a hope in hell) it includes such luminaries as Iain Dowie, Gary Megson, Roy Keane, Glenn Roeder, Phil Brown, Alan Shearer and Gareth Southgate! Hardly inspiring is it?

I guess it's easy for us Addicks to talk about equality as we have Chris Powell, Alex Dyer and Damian Matthew on the sideline, but to be honest I didn't even know they were black because I never look at them in that way. That's where we need to get to.

Road to Wembley - Everton host Sunderland

David Moyes celebrated 10 years as Everton manager this week (we won't mention the 0-3 defeat to rivals Liverpool on the day of his anniversery). The FA Cup would be a great way to reward the board that have shown incredible patience and support in him. Equally the incredibly loyal and down to earth Scotsman would be a popular winner if he could lift the famous trophy in May.

Everton take on Sunderland tomorrow lunchtime.

How brave were those two boys, sons of the late Gary Speed?

New Welsh manager Chris Coleman was struggling to hold it together during the press conference after the final whistle as he praised his former colleague's sons.

"Ed is 14 years old," said the new Wales coach. "And he came into the dressing room afterwards. There wasn't a tear in his eye. He was as strong as an ox and spoke to the players. He stood there and said to them":

"My dad always told me that if you do your best, then that's enough. And I think you lot did your best tonight. That's good enough."

"What can you say when a lad who has just lost his dad says that to a bunch of professional footballers? That's bravery, isn't it? His boys were absolutely magnificent."

Bagpuss and Woody close in

N&R Division 1 - week 28 update
Boys on tour are still the flag carriers at the top of Div 1. Tanus Terriers remain 2nd, with The Magnificent Eleven 3rd but now joined by Bagpuss and Woody's Round Up.

N&R Division 2 - week 28 update

2Infinity & beyond are now 5th, Full Metal Jacket climb above Barceloner and Kings of Leon Osman jump over Brighton Blues.

Arsene Still Knows remain in the Penultimate Place.

Stout tastes of victory

Manager of the Week - week 28
Stouty with the week 28 MoW award then - well done sir. 38 points in a low scoring week with the now with a spring in her step Chillers, who scored 30.

Sarah Sheron hit 26, Tony Murray 24 and Steve Black, Henry and Soozie with 22 as some of the managers lower down the table floated to the top in week 28.

At the bottom Mark Simmons gave himself a fright as his 0 points nearly beat his week 11's -2!

Simmons tops the worst list

The low scoring week 28 added some low scores to the worst weekly score list. Mark remains worst of the lot and course for the cash prize.

First ever match

Ian Kennett may regret taking his son to his first ever football match. He was one of the 26,000 that were at The Valley to see a 2-0 win over Stevenage recently.

By all accounts Kennett Junior had a fantastic time (see photo), 4 coach loads from Ian's Rugby Club went (no wonder when its £12 a pop including the match ticket) and to get in to the local Isthmian League Division One South Folkestone Invicta is £8!!

They sat in the East Stand in glorious sunshine 7 rows back in line with the penalty box near the away end.

It was a comfortable win for the Addicks and jumbo sausages at half time all round. Ian, I assume enjoyed a watered down beer at the break.

Bradley Wright Phillips (is better than Shaun) should have had 5 but scored one, but Michael Morrison's screamer of a first goal was a cracking first ever live goal for Ian's lad to see. Even funnier was Ian's bro' was out getting the teas in and missed it!

Charlton thoroughly deserved the win and it was a great day out and sadly may not be the last time we go .......although pre match music was ok....

Cheers
Ian

Everest Base Camp Trek 2012 - Walking with the Wounded

Dear All

You may recall that in April 2011 a team including 4 wounded soldiers, successfully completed an unsupported trek to the North Pole, an amazing feat which was the subject of the inspirational BBC documentary Harry’s Arctic Heroes.

Not content with that unbelievable achievement, in May this year another group will attempt to successfully summit Mount Everest and put a team of wounded servicemen on top of the world!

I have been given the opportunity of trekking to Everest Base Camp at an altitude of 5276m with the extended team.

As a slightly unfit forty something this could be interesting to say the least, but my immediate goal is to raise as much money as possible for this fantastic cause.

You will all have seen the news reports and documentaries which graphically show the consequences for the service men and women injured in the line of duty.

Walking with the Wounded raises funds to finance new qualifications, courses and further education for those who are seriously injured. It enables the blind, the burn victims, the mentally injured, the amputees and all the other wounded personnel to rebuild their lives and to return to the work place.

Please help me support them by visiting my Just Giving page

Please remember to tick the gift aid option.

Thank you in advance for your kind support.

Regards

Ian Kennett
