The 2010 N&R Celebrity Death Pool was finally won yesterday after 95-year old Norman Wisdom passed away in a nursing home on the Isle of Man.
His black and white movies were to a generation heartwarming and funny. He was a master of comic timing and good old fashioned slapstick. Sir Norman starred in 19 films
Sir Norman played the fool in his shrunken jacket and flat cap, defying fate and Mr Grimsdale, to eventually of course get the girl in the final frame. He was also a hit Broadway in the 1960's defying most people's perception that he couldn't act.
Also he had a huge following in Albania. During the height of the Cold War, the country's Stalinist rulers decreed that his films were politically acceptable and he was the only westerner allowed onto Albanian television screens!
Sir Norman, who was knighted in 2000, was renowned for a string of comic roles and Charlie Chaplin described him as his favourite clown.
His later work included the recurring role of Billy Ingleton in the long-running BBC comedy Last of the Summer Wine.
